♟️ DID YOU KNOW? NINE-YEAR-OLD FILIPINO CHESS PRODIGY CONQUERED ASIA
Nine-year-old Bince Rafael Operiano of Busac, Oas, Albay, represented the Philippines at the 6th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship in Bangkok in November 2022.
His family struggled to afford a second plane ticket for his father, Ben, a security guard who had taught Bince to play chess. The Philippine Sports Commission covered Bince’s airfare, registration and accommodation, and he travelled safely with the Philippine delegation and an appointed adult guardian—not alone.
His father initially remained behind while seeking help to pay for his own ticket. After assistance arrived, he followed Bince to Bangkok.
Despite struggling during the early part of the competition, Bince recovered and emerged as the Under-10 champion among 29 participants from across Asia. He returned home with a gold trophy and four medals—one gold, one silver and two bronze.
His victory was remarkable, but his experience also highlighted the financial difficulties many promising Filipino athletes face before reaching the international stage.
Talent can take an athlete far—but timely, adequate and transparent support can ensure that no child has to face that journey without the people who guide them.
