Sometimes the most meaningful victories aren't measured by medals, but by opportunities created đź’™
Over the past two weeks, I've had the privilege of seeing swimming through the eyes of young people—some experiencing the joy of the water for the very first time. Without question, it has been the most rewarding and unforgettable experience of my 30+ years of coaching.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of the iSwim community, friends and the NSC more than 120 Dellwood Middle School students—including 13 neurodivergent students—received two weeks of structured swimming lessons. Some of the comments from the students have stayed with me:
💙 “I wish I could be here more. I don’t want it to end.”
💙 “I loved it.”
💙 “I want to swim more.”
Hearing those words is a powerful reminder of why this work matters.
Even more exciting, eight students who demonstrated enthusiasm, determination, growth, and natural ability will receive swimming scholarships to continue developing their skills. It's a small but important step toward making swimming in Bermuda more accessible, inclusive, and sustainable for future generations.
Swimming is so much more than a sport. It builds confidence, improves academic performance, increases aerobic fitness and lung capacity, and provides a low-impact form of exercise. It's not just a life skill—it's a lifelong skill.
While this pilot program lasted only two weeks, the vision behind it has been years in the making: breaking down barriers that prevent young people from accessing swimming and ensuring more students can experience the confidence, safety, joy, and lifelong benefits the water provides.
A grassroots approach creates lasting change, and this is only the beginning.
To everyone who supported, encouraged, believed in, and helped bring this dream to life including Steph for embracing and partnering with me on this initiative and the fabulous team of instructors Bran, Kath and Thomas—thank you. As I take a moment to reflect, recharge, and appreciate what has been accomplished, I'm filled with gratitude and excitement for what's ahead.
A dream, paired with intentional hard work, became a reality. đź’«
And we're just getting started.

Dreams do come true 🌊
Over the past few years, I’ve been working on an initiative to help expand access to swimming for public school students by removing common barriers such as equipment and transportation.
Through the generous donations of the iSwim community and friends, this passion project - the Middle School Swimming Initiative became a fully funded reality on May 25thđź’™ I'm incredibly grateful and humbled by the overwhelming support in helping bring one of my dreams for Bermuda swimming to life. I've cried happy tears many times over the past month.
I am so appreciative to Stephanie Kemp for partnering with me, Jenny Smatt for her continued guidance, advice and support, our wonderful instructors - Brandon Adkins, Thomas Cechini and Katherine Wheddon and my entire tribe who hold me down and always support my goals and ambitions.
We’re proud to have approximately 90 Dellwood M1, M2, and M3 students registered to participate in swimming lessons over the next two weeks including 9 ASD students who I have the absolute pleasure of coaching — an exciting step toward making swimming more accessible and inclusive for all. The goal is to offer complimentary swimming lessons to every public middle school by September.
Beyond teaching an essential life skill, this initiative also hopes to identify emerging talent and connect young swimmers with future opportunities in the sport through swimming scholarships which in turn will create greater participation, opportunity and diversity in the pool.
Beyond excited to see what's ahead and how this initiative helps to shape the future of Bermuda swimming.
