Golf Courses in Kuala Lumpur
Golfers that are considering visiting the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur should definitely put the following golf courses in Kuala Lumpur on their bucket lists.
I am going to countdown my personal 5 favorite courses all within easy reach of the city center.
5 – Templer Park Country Club
The superb layout is a credit to course designer Jumbo Ozaki.
In designing this top-quality golf course Ozaki created a superb test of golf for all levels of golfer and the backdrop of the simply breath-taking Takun Mountain only adds to the occasion.
The front 9 is relatively flat, but clever earth movement during the construction phase creates shape and gives form to the holes which are perfectly outlined with the use of trees and water hazards. You will need your course management head to ensure that you begin well here, with the emphasis placed on the tee shots.
As you move onto the back nine the landscape changes and you are faced with a tee shot from the highest point on the course offering wonderful views of the mountainside jungles. The back nine is gentle but as it winds its way to a close the course really challenges the golfer. The final hole is a beauty, you are presented with a view of the entire hole, the ever-present Takun Mountain and the water hazard that requires a good tee shot to carry onto the fairway. The second shot requires accuracy to the elevated green that is protected on the right by thick jungle growth
4 – Saujana Golf and Country Club - Bunga Raya Course
This is the little sister of the better-known Palm Course but it more than deserves a place on this list. The course is tight, and is well deserving of the local nickname “The Crocodile”. Designed by Ronald Fream the course undulates through the dense jungle and across the old railway into the palm oil plantation that one occupied the area. The standout holes are the par four 4th, requiring the most accurate of drives if you are to find the fairway dotted with bunkers, the island green par three 17th and the 18th which can be reached from the tee across the lake.
3 – The Mines Resort and Golf Club
Although it is tough for visitors to get a tee time on this private member club but trying to get a tee time is more than worth the effort. Robert Trent Jones Jr worked a mini-miracle here as he converted an old tin mine into one of Malaysia´s greatest courses.
As you play through the front nine holes, framed by jungle flora and fauna, you are treated to a masterclass in bunker design and placement. The second hole is an absolute gem of a par 3. Played over the jungle-clad ravine towards the green.
The second nine comes out of the jungle and is played along the shores of the large lake which was once the heart of the tin mine. A particular delight is the Palace of the Golden Horses which overlooks the 12th hole and just one of the many large buildings to stand guard over the stunning Trent Jones Jr designs.
2 – Saujana Golf and Country Club – Palm Course
Recognised as the big sister of the Bunga Raya course and host to the professional tournaments played at Saujana, the Palm course is longer and full of substantial changes in elevation. As with Bunga Raya the jungle plays a huge role in the layout of the front nine. The back nine is set out amongst buildings and offices and is more “urban” in style. The course has many a memorable hole and Freams design will ensure that you do not go away disappointed.
1 – TPC Kuala Lumpur – West Course
The course underwent a major facelift, and this has created a magnificent golf course that will test you from start to finish. The front nine is tighter than the back and works it way up to the highest point on the course, before the 8th and 9th playback down towards the clubhouse.
The more open back nine, sees the arrival of more water hazards and some immense bunkers that are deep and troublesome.
Greens here are in superb condition year-round and are without a doubt some of the best in Malaysia, if not Asia. It is hard to convey in writing just how good The West Course is. A magnificent achievement by the designer who upgraded the previous layout.
