Their spirit is reflected in the movements of the Poomse Koryo. Each movement of this Poomse represents the strength and energy needed to control the Mongols. 30 Motions, 10 kicks, 4 punches, 2 keup.

The 8th and final Taegeuk is pure Yang - Gon, the earth, totally receptive of all light. This is the destination of a students journey to Black Belt. Just as everything eventually returns to the earth from whence it came, Gon completes the cycle of a students Taekwondo training.

Tae Geuk CHIL Jang

Mountain Taegeuk 7 Jang symbolizes the "Kan", one of the 8 divination signs, which represents the mountain, meaning ponder and firmness. Mountains are tall and majestic and tower over us. This poomse should be performed with a feeling of the strength and majesty of a mountain.

Tae Geuk YOOK Jang

Water Taegeuk 6 Jang symbolizes the "Kam", one of the 8 divination signs, which represents water, meaning incessant flow and softness. Water can be flowing or static like a lake and yet has the power to move and destroy mountains.

The 5th Taegeuk embodies the image of Seon, the wind, fast and powerful yet subtle and invisible. The principle of the wind is emphasized by the sweeping actions of the hammer fist at the patterns source and the step into X-stance at the end of the pattern.

Tae Geuk SAH Jang
Thunder Taegeuk 4 Jang symbolizes the "Jin", one of the 8 divination signs, which represent the thunder, meaning great power and dignity. Thunder is a powerful force of nature and comes from heaven, to be absorbed by the earth.

Taegeuk 3 태극 3장 (Taegeuk Sam-jahng)

This trigram represents Fire. Related to this symbol is also East and the relationship of the Second Daughter. Fire contains a lot of energy. The symbol behind the fire is similar to the symbolism of the water in that both can aid and both can destroy.

Taegeuk Iijang Pattern 2

This second training pattern represents the concept of Tae or joy and is symbolized by the image of a lake. Joy is a clear, relaxed mind. This pattern should be performed with a relaxed fluidity but should still be firm and correct. The shape of the Taegeuk movements is the character for King.

This first training pattern symbolizes the concept of Keon. Keon is pure Yin and represents the creative elements of heaven and light. It is the beginning and the source of all things to come in Taekwondo. This pattern should be performed with a powerful freshness and a sense of beginning.
