WORLD BICYCLE DAY 2026

Today, as the world celebrates World Bicycle Day, we join millions of people across the globe in recognizing the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, and sustainable means of transportation, recreation, and sport.

The bicycle is more than just a machine, it is a symbol of freedom, health, opportunity, and environmental sustainability. Every day, bicycles help people commute to work, stay active, reduce traffic congestion, and connect communities.

At the Botswana Cycling Association, we celebrate all cyclists across Botswana, from young riders taking their first pedal strokes, to commuters using bicycles for daily transport, to elite athletes proudly representing our nation on the international stage.

Cycling contributes to:
- Better physical and mental health
- Cleaner and greener communities
- Safer and more sustainable transport
- Youth development and social inclusion
- Economic opportunities through sport and tourism

On this special day, we encourage Batswana to embrace cycling, whether for fitness, transportation, recreation, or competition. Together, we can build a stronger cycling culture and create safer roads for all road users.

Let us continue pedaling towards a healthier nation, a cleaner environment, and a brighter future.

πŸš΄πŸΏβ€β™€οΈ Happy World Bicycle Day! πŸš΄πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ

Botswana’s junior road race sensational rider Ontlametse Maswabi has done the country proud by winning the second spot at the Western Province League race in South Africa last week. πŸŽ–οΈπŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½

Botswana Cycling athletes Hope Mathiba (Female Youth) and Ontlametse Maswabi (Male Junior) returned home from Paarl, South Africa where they attended a training camp at the Union Cycliste International World Cycling Centre Africa (WCCA).

The month long training camp started on the 1st of March and ended on the 30th of March 2026. The camp included races that were used to develop the athletes’ technical skills, physical conditioning, and tactical capacity in preparation for upcoming competitions.

Maswabi participated in the Western Province League race and showed excellent potential right from the first moment on the climb. The race was a challenging WP League event featuring a tough 5 km climb in False Bay. He tackled the mountain twice during the race and handled it with real strength, eventually finding himself racing with the leaders in the Category 2 group.

Maswabi performed very well and finished as the 2nd Junior rider on the 5 km hill-top finish. This is a strong result, especially considering the quality of the field and the demanding profile of the course.

Congratulations to Ontlametse on this promising performance and racing the Botswana flag high. We are proud to see him competing at this level and showing such good form.

BCA thanks the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) for their support in making the training camp possible.
