Special Olympics Botswana Strengthens Inclusive Sport Through Coaches Training in Palapye

Special Olympics Botswana is hosting a dynamic and impactful Coaches Training session at Ratsie Setlhako Primary School, bringing together 50 coaches from across the Central Region. The training marked another deliberate step toward strengthening inclusive sports delivery and building technical capacity at grassroots level.

Facilitated by Mr. Botshelo Mogotsi, a sports expert and board member, the session focused on equipping coaches with practical knowledge and skills to enhance athlete development within their clubs. His facilitation blends technical insight with lived experience, creating a learning environment that was both rigorous and accessible.

Participants, drawn from various districts across Central Botswana, engaged deeply throughout the training. There was a clear sense of purpose, not just to attend, but to return to their communities sharper, more confident, and better prepared to support athletes with intellectual disabilities. The cohort arrived eager to learn and left positioned to grow their programs with renewed clarity and structure.

The training emphasized key pillars of Special Olympics programming, including athlete centered coaching, inclusive sports practices, and sustainable club development. Beyond theory, coaches were encouraged to think systemically, considering how their role connects to broader outcomes in health, education, and community inclusion.

Special Olympics Botswana extends its sincere appreciation to Lions Clubs International for their continued support in making initiatives like this possible. Their partnership remains instrumental in advancing opportunities for athletes and strengthening the ecosystem around inclusive sport.

As we celebrate International Down Syndrome Day, we are on the ground at Zantete Primary School bringing health closer to where it matters most.

Athletes from Lethakane and Rakops are receiving eye screening (Opening Eyes), health promotion, and Medfest services, ensuring that no athlete is left unseen, unheard, or underserved.

Over 100 athletes are being screened today, each one a story of strength, joy, and possibility. This is what inclusion looks like in action: not theory, but presence. Not intention, but delivery.
Because health is not a privilege,it is a right. And today, that right is reaching further.

Tlamelo Mogomotsi didn’t just compete at the Region 5 Games last November, she claimed gold in both the 200m and long jump, a double statement of speed and strength. Now, that excellence echoes louder with her nomination for Sportswoman of the Year with Disability at the Vunani Annual Women’s Sports Awards.
We are incredibly proud of you, Tlamelo. You are not just representing Special Olympics Botswana, you are redefining what is possible.
