💪 Arrichion of Phigalia — The Champion Who Won in Death
Arrhichion of Phigalia is remembered as one of the most extreme examples of toughness and honor in the history of sport. A celebrated pankratiast from the city of Phigalia in Arcadia, Arrhichion competed during the height of the Ancient Olympic Games, where victory was valued above all else and submission carried immense shame.
Pankration was among the most brutal events in the ancient Olympics. A combination of boxing and wrestling, it allowed strikes, throws, joint locks, and chokes. The only actions forbidden were biting and eye gouging. There were no weight classes, no time limits, and no rounds. Matches ended only when one competitor submitted or was rendered unable to continue.
Arrhichion was already a proven champion before his final appearance at the Olympics. He had previously won pankration titles and entered his last Olympic Games as a favorite. During the final match, his opponent locked in a powerful chokehold, wrapping his legs around Arrhichion’s torso and cutting off his air.
According to ancient historians, including Pausanias, Arrhichion refused to submit despite losing consciousness. With his final strength, he dislocated or twisted his opponent’s ankle or foot, causing such severe pain that the opponent signaled submission. Moments later, Arrhichion died from the effects of the choke.
Because his opponent submitted first, the judges declared Arrhichion the victor. His lifeless body was crowned with the olive wreath, the highest honor of the Ancient Games, and he was celebrated as an Olympic champion. Statues and inscriptions were later dedicated to him, ensuring his legacy would endure.
Arrhichion’s story highlights the brutal reality of ancient sport, where honor, endurance, and victory outweighed even life itself. More than two thousand years later, his name remains synonymous with ultimate resolve.

MMA FACTS. The term "mixed martial arts" was first documented not by an active martial artist but a television critic by the name of Howard Rosenberg in 1993 when the first UFC events were televised. It was later coined by Jeff Blatnick, a Greco-Roman wrestler and TV commentator. In the context of combining different skills from various sources, other labels were used before this time such as eclectic, hybrid, etc. But none of this was the creation of one man or family in the 20th Century for it is carved in stone that the ancient Greeks devised the first MMA (Pankration) some 2500 years ago. Anyone who thinks differently is living in Plato's Cave and ignorant of its true origins.

Pankration was a competition of the ancient , a combination of wrestling, kicking and boxing without straps. Aristotle (Rhetoric A 5-14, 1361b) defines it as follows: "Both of them pan-nationalist".
The name comes from the words pan + kratein, i.e. the winner was the one who "possesses the dominant power" or the one who "dominates completely", while the athletes were called pankratiastes. This sport, which could also be described as a martial art, was introduced to the Games in 648 BC in the 33rd .
It was spectacular and popular ("En Olympia to kallion", Philostratos), but also dangerous, since it often resulted in the death of one of the opponents (Pausanias H,10.1).
The ancient Games after 200 BC they also introduced a less violent "Kids' Pancrat" competition for the new boys.!!
