Today is Yellow Ball Day!
Did you know🧐💡
The bright yellow tennis ball is actually a relatively recent invention in the long history of tennis. 👀💡🎾
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, tennis balls were usually white. 🤍 Earlier versions could even be black or dark-colored, depending on the court surface and visibility needs. White balls became standard because most players wore white clothing, especially at tournaments like Wimbledon Championships.
During the 1960s and 1970s, color television became widespread. Broadcasters noticed that white tennis balls were difficult for viewers to follow on TV screens, especially against grass courts or bright backgrounds.
In 1972, the International Tennis Federation officially approved yellow tennis balls for tournament play.
Why “Optic Yellow”?
The exact shade is designed for maximum visibility:
* Easier to track at high speeds
* More visible under different lighting conditions
* Better for television broadcasting and spectators
