This is a before and after setup of a good player I work with. Oddly enough, this player tended to hit it the ball off the toe. Makes sense why they’d like to set up off of the heel.

The key for this player was to retrain their eyes to set up off of the middle of the club face, and then swing in a way “trying to hit it off of the heel” in order to get centre contact. Once the centre contact be came consistent, so did the carry distance.

But how much does centre contact really matter?

I see consistently on a launch monitor: a strike that is roughly ½ inch toward the heel or toe can cost 5 to 10 yards of carry. A more severe miss (¾ inch or more off-centre) can result in 10 to 20 yards of distance loss. Aka, the difference between hitting it on the green and hitting it in the water short.

Proper setup reduces the number of variables before the swing starts. Set up correctly, then learn to deliver the club correctly. Your ball just might thank you for it.

What’s actually in a good player’s playbook?

Working with Team BC this spring, every player is building a mental game process they can trust when it matters.

Many golfers just ‘hope it shows up’ on the course. This group doesn’t.

What’s in yours?

A special way to close out the season. Honoured to receive the Gibson Family Scholarship and be named Lower Mainland Coach of the Year.

To everyone who’s been part of the journey this year; students, parents, coaches, mentors, teammates, sponsors, partners and peers, you’ve all made a huge impact. Thank you!

Very lucky to be living my passion every day.

Swing sequence from a Junior Champion

Briar Friesen (12) won our Junior Night points race this year at Ledgeview.

What’s the first thing you notice in her swing when you scroll through?

No doubt my favourite part is how she creates speed using the ground. A massive left leg push from the ground catapults the golf club into the back of the ball.

One to keep an eye on.

Very happy to share that I’ve joined as a Coach for Team BC leading the new Fraser Valley Boys and Girls Squads.

Boys:
-
-Noah Reddicopp

Girls:
-
-Kathleen Dunn

This new coaching role is in addition to my positions at and . I am very grateful for the opportunity to join a fantastic team of coaches and work with the provinces strongest young golfers. I’m excited to see what our squad will accomplish!

It feels great to get back on the road to travel to events again, albeit in a different capacity than the past for me. But this role is much easier on my back 😬 and yes, coaches do feel the nerves and the excitement just as players do.
