This message hits.

It’s easy to say “kids have changed.”
It’s harder to look in the mirror.

Have we lowered expectations?
Have we made things too easy?
Are we preparing players for reality — or protecting them from it?

Real development comes from being challenged, being pushed, and being held to a higher standard.

That’s where growth happens.

“Bad teams, nobody leads. Average teams, coaches lead. Elite teams, players lead.”

(From Row the Boat, by PJ Fleck)

When our team read that together this season, it hit me hard. We walked through a season full of challenges, opportunities, and moments that demanded growth.

I realized how often I was leading the charge - so much so that maybe players didn’t feel the room, or even the need, to lead themselves.

That realization pushed me to reevaluate how we were developing leadership on our team.

So we made changes. For the first time ever, we instituted a “captain of the day,” giving every athlete a chance to be heard and a responsibility to step forward.

I even stepped back from breaking down huddles - something I love doing - so the players could find their voices instead.

And as I reflected on former teams who experienced significant success, I recognized this same pattern: those teams had strong, confident player-leaders. They followed my lead, but they also took ownership and led each other.

Spiritually, this reminds me of how crucial it is to develop leaders for the future, not just carry the whole load ourselves.

2 Timothy 2:2 says, “And the things you have heard me say… entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”

Leadership isn’t just about guiding, it’s about equipping others to guide as well. Let’s never forget how important it is to raise up and empower the leaders coming after us.
