For simple visual reaction time, the average person reacts in 200-250 milliseconds (about a quarter of a second).

Professional athletes range between 160-210 ms (with elite specialists) dropping much lower depending on the sport.

Step 1: Light entering the eye is converted to neural signals and relayed to the occiptal lobe, the brain's primary visual processing center.

Step 2: Visual information is passed along for further interpretation (multiple brain regions are working together here).
