More women, young people, and newcomers are getting involved in shooting sports and safe, responsible fi****ms ownership. At the Canadian Shooting Sports Association, we’re proud to see our community growing and becoming more diverse. Safety remains our top priority.

“The results of this recent Nanos poll are encouraging. For more than a decade, the Liberal government has tried to blame their public safety failures on licensed gun owners. This isn’t working any longer,” Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights’ CEO and executive director, Rod Giltaca, told Juno News on Thursday.

“The public is fully aware that the overwhelming majority of firearm-related violence is perpetrated with illegal fi****ms smuggled from the United States. If the public wants a safer Canada, the Liberal government needs to work on the actual root causes of firearm-related violence.”

Thanks to new records obtained by Rebel News through an Access to Information request, we now have a clearer picture of Ottawa’s fi****ms buyback program. Only 187 businesses across Canada participated and claimed compensation for just over 12,000 fi****ms. The majority of these were unsellable inventory left behind after the government’s 2020 ban. These are not fi****ms linked to violent crime, but products that were purchased legally before suddenly being prohibited.

Meanwhile, the government still has not told Canadians how many individual owners actually turned in their fi****ms. While officials once claimed over 67,000 fi****ms were declared, that number dropped as people changed their minds or updated their declarations. The actual number surrendered by individuals remains unknown.

This raises serious questions about transparency and whether billions in taxpayer dollars are being spent wisely. Law enforcement continues to point to illegal smuggling and organized crime as the real sources of gun violence—not the law-abiding businesses and owners caught up in these policies.

Canadians deserve honest answers about the impact of this program and real efforts to make our communities safer. The Canadian Shooting Sports Association stands with responsible fi****ms owners and businesses who expect better from their government.

If Doug Ford actually matched the moves Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Yukon have made on the fi****ms file, it would put serious pressure on Ottawa. Those provinces have passed laws and taken clear action. Ontario, though, has mostly just said it won’t help with the federal gun confiscation program. That’s not the same thing as leading.

If Ontario took a real stand and joined the others with concrete steps, it would make it a lot harder for the federal government to push ahead. Right now, Ford’s approach just makes it easier for them.

Isn’t it time Ontario stepped up and actually made a difference?

In a letter received yesterday, the Attorney General of Canada stated they would "not oppose" the motions made by proposed interveners (see list below) to intervene in CCFR v Canada, thus approving them to participate.
