Would love to see the Murray Road loop revamped around the end of Murray Mountain....
Still posted as a road, but not maintained anymore...
It's rare to get such a great satellite shot showing all the Maritimes under near-clear skies. A bit of cirrus this morning is all I see. You can see the small ice pack and the snow that fell last week. I hope the trails are fine. The sat pic has a play button on the bottom.

St Ann's Bay: follow our story. Saturday Community Snowshoe Hike on Lewis Mountain Road and the trail to the old Morrison Farm with hot chocolate break at the place of the old barn. Thank you Wanda Macleod Eldridge Jim Eldridge and Don Buchanan.
Thank you, Wanda Macleod Eldridge, Jim Eldridge and Don Buchanan, for hosting this wonderful hike today!
More fun! Taking the little one on a “lion hunt” on the trails!
This is the trail from above. Several hours of sunshine available before the sun sets, with a nice new snowpack. I'd love to be there. https://weather.cod.edu/satrad/?parms=subregional-St_Lawrence-truecolor-24-0-100-1&checked=map&colorbar=undefined&fbclid=IwAR2pVbHT_zOrmf4erjFaVwgrPNtHg0vK_EoOzonWsheVfL_n7ahG-rrBZPQ

The first 800 m on Lewis Mountain Road from the Cabot Trail entrance to Mill Cove Brook Bridge, immediately after the snowfall on January 3, 2021. Comparable to today's beautiful scene after the snow storm!
This is a great great initiatives not just for our local hikers. It helps foster relationships with neighborhood communities and other trail groups who are all willing to work together on bigger and better projects and trail connectivity. Maybe by the time this covid thing is over we will be ready to be part of the big big tourism plan to have Cape Breton known as an international trail distinction. I believe that initivitive is called Distination Cape Breton. Very very exciting times with huge potential. Personally I think this covid thing is going to help us in the long run because the world is looking at us and saying, wow. They don’t have covid, a beautiful place to live and in these very trying times we still have a quality of life that you will find nowhere’s else in the world and the world know it. I’m excited about our potential. We just have to continue to keep making it better.

Last Sunday: a 4 wheeler ride from the Cabot Trail end of Lewis Mountain Road to Bald Mountain. Approximately 7.3 km (4.54 mi) on Lewis Mountain Road to the junction of the 750 snowmobile track and then approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) to the peak. Estimated 1.6 km (1 mi) before the peak, we parked the 4 wheeler, as the Wilderness Area begins there.

After 2 km from the Cabot Trail, Lewis Mountain Road crosses the Powerline. From there 200 m uphill you have a fantastic view of St. Ann's Bay and with binoculars you can see Colaisde na Gàidhlig / The Gaelic College.

In addition to the public trails in our area, there are many beautiful hikes on private properties. We are very fortunate to have friends and neighbours who invite us on their land. Yesterday, Dennis Laffan hosted the Community Hike. He led us through his wonderful forest and shared his extensive historical, scientific and botanical knowledge. Some of the trees on his property are even 400 years old!

From Colaisde na Gàidhlig / The Gaelic College parking lot on Cabot Trail to the northwest, it's about half a mile to the waterfront at North Gut. As an extension of this trail, it is worth crossing the peninsula to the east, as described in one of the last posts.

The Wednesday Ceilidh from Colaisde na Gàidhlig / The Gaelic College in person or online starts today at 7:30 pm.

Lots of wildlife tracks on the short snowshoe hike on the trail at Colaisde na Gàidhlig / The Gaelic College. The approx. 1.5 km loop leads to Black Cove in the east of the peninsula, a detour to North Gut in the west is also recommended.

On behalf of the community of the greater St.Ann's Bay Area, we would like to again thank you for your support of the development of the Lewis Mnt. Trail System. This trail is used extensively by hikers, snow shoers ,skiers, snowmobiles and ATV's and is an important link from our community which allows users to connect to Baddeck, the Highlands and beyond.
2020 was a difficult year to have volunteers gather together to work on trail improvements due to concerns with covid. Despite this,we were able to have several working parties and we did complete substantial trail repairs and improvements. We brought a large section of the road from the first bridge up towards the power line to public road status. This should help prevent future erosion. Also, we established a lower gravel pit with a great supply of quality gravel and two additional gravel pits on the trail near where future work must be carried out. In 2021 we would like to complete further work on these sections.
In addition we would like to give special thanks to Crowdis Mtn Snowmobile Club & TIR Baddeck. This would not be possible without the gracious support of the County of Victoria.Financial report will be released shortly.
