For generations, these lightweight, practical guns travelled with hunters and traders across vast stretches of North America.

The 𝗛𝘂𝗱𝘀𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗻𝘀. Instead, it purchased British-made smoothbore fi****ms for the trade, including the pattern that became widely known as the 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗻.

𝙎𝙤, 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙨𝙤 𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙛𝙪𝙡?

A smoothbore could be loaded with a 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲
or 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 — giving hunters a versatile fi***rm for very different situations.

Many North West guns shared some instantly recognizable features:
🔸 Flintlock ignition
🔸 Smoothbore barrel
🔸 Lightweight construction
🔸 Large trigger guard
🐍 A distinctive brass 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲

Mounted on the opposite side of the stock from the lock, the brass sideplate helped reinforce the area around the lock screws. Its distinctive serpent or dragon-like shape became so closely associated with North West trade guns that today it’s one of the features collectors and historians immediately look for.

Trade guns were used primarily for 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱, but they also played roles in travel, defence, warfare and the wider fur-trade economy.

Their popularity came down to something simple: 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙙. They were light, versatile, relatively economical to use and well suited to life in the Canadian interior.

You might be surprised how many expressions we still use today have roots in 𝗺𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀! 💥

Here are a few you may recognize:

🔫 “𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗿𝘆” — Be prepared and ready for whatever comes. Black powder and moisture are not exactly best friends. 🌧️

🎯 “𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗿” — Someone who is honest, direct, and trustworthy — no tricks, just straight shooting.

💨 “𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲” — To hesitate or be delayed. A hang fire is a noticeable delay between initiating ignition and the fi***rm actually discharging.

🔥 “𝗕𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁” — Meaning to endure something difficult or unpleasant. This one is commonly associated with fi****ms, although the exact origin of the expression is debated.

Who knew a little muzzleloading history was hiding in everyday conversation? 🤔

One of the great things about muzzleloading is that it’s a sport you can discover at almost any age — and continue enjoying for decades.

You might be surprised how many expressions we still use today have roots in 𝗺𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀! 💥

Here are a few you may recognize:

🔒 “𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗸, 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗹” — Meaning the whole thing or everything. The lock, stock, and barrel are three of the major components of a traditional fi***rm.

⚡ “𝗔 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗻” — Something that looks promising but quickly fizzles out. With a flintlock, the priming powder in the pan could ignite with a bright flash but fail to fire the main charge.

🎯 “𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁” — To give something a try or make an attempt. Sometimes you just have to take your shot!

💥 “𝗚𝗼 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳-𝗰𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱” — To act too quickly or before you're properly prepared. On traditional fi****ms, the half-cock position was part of the firing mechanism — and definitely not where you wanted things going off!

Who knew a little muzzleloading history was hiding in everyday conversation? 🤔
