Want more trails? HBMBA needs your help!
The Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) is developing a new Management Plan for Iroquoia Heights. This plan will determine how land is used, maintained, and developed for years to come, including whether mountain biking gets more trail access or less.
The HBMBA has been working with the HCA to advocate for trail development, but our voice is only as strong as the community behind us. Want to get involved?
Hereās how you can help:
1. Take the HCAās survey before June 12
(15 minutes)
https://conservationtalkhca.ca/dundas-valley-study-area-plans-phase-1/news_feed/iroquoia-heights-conservation-area
The more mountain bikers they hear from, the harder it is to overlook our community. Most questions in the survey are straightforward, but Question 21 (Additional comments) is the most important. This is your chance to speak directly to decision makers. You can use or adapt the response belowāthe more personal the better!
As a mountain biker who frequents Hamiltonās trail system, I would love to see further trail development at Iroquoia Heights. Conservation areas like these play a vital role in connecting people with nature and encouraging active, healthy lifestyles. Sanctioned mountain biking trails attract riders from across the region, supporting local tourism and the businesses that depend on it.
Well-maintained, sanctioned trails reduce erosion and discourage unauthorized trail building. They also allow for the riding community to organize proper stewardship through volunteer maintenance and building days. The mountain biking community cares deeply about the health and sustainability of the land we ride on.
I would like to see the Management Plan reflect the growing demand for mountain biking by expanding trail access, improving connectivity to surrounding trail networks, and working with the HBMBA to support future trail development at Iroquoia Heights.
Take the survey!
2. Email a councillor
(5 minutes)
Several Hamilton city councillors sit on the HCA board (see the list below) and have direct influence over this process. A short email from a constituent goes a long way. Find your councillor here.
If your councillor is on the HCA board, email them directly:
Maureen Wilson (Ward 1 - [email protected])
Matt Francis (Ward 5 - [email protected])
Brad Clark (Ward 9 - [email protected])
Jeff Beattie (Ward 10 - [email protected])
Craig Cassar (Ward 12 - [email protected])
Alex Wilson (Ward 13 - [email protected])
Mike Spadafora (Ward 14 - [email protected])
If your councillor isnāt on the list, send your email to Mike Spadafora ([email protected]), who represents Ward 14 where Iroquoia Heights is located.
Hereās a short email you can copy and paste, or personalize to make your own:
Subject: Support for Mountain Biking in the Iroquois Heights Management Plan
Dear [Councillor Name],
I am a mountain biker who regularly uses Hamiltonās trail system. Iām writing to ask for your support for sanctioning mountain biking trails in the upcoming Iroquois Heights Management Plan currently being developed by the HCA.
Mountain biking trails bring significant value to our community. Through the Hamilton Burlington Mountain Biking Association, the mountain biking community actively organizes to ensure responsible trail use and stewardship.
The reality is that trails in Iroquois Heights already exist. Sanctioning them in the Management Plan would enable our community to properly maintain and manage them in collaboration with the HCA.
Thank you for your time and service to our community.
Kind regards,
[Your Name]
** Thank you for taking the time to make your voice heard. **
Happy trails!

The argument against bike lanes is usually about cost. The evidence increasingly says that argument has it backwards.
A report from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, supported by the FIA Foundation, found that networks of protected bicycle lanes can be remarkably cost-effective. In the cities it studied, these networks created more economic value each year than they cost to build, paying for themselves in under a year once you account for transport savings and the health benefits of more people exercising. On that measure they outperformed far more expensive projects, including metro rail.
The safety case is just as strong. One of the most comprehensive studies of road safety, led by researchers at the University of Colorado Denver, found that it was not the number of cyclists that made a city safer, but the infrastructure built for them. Separated, protected lanes were linked to fewer fatalities for all road users, not only those on bikes.
The type of lane matters enormously. Research from Canadian cities including Toronto and Vancouver found that physically separated cycle tracks were far safer than painted lanes, and far better at convincing hesitant people to ride in the first place. Paint on the road, it turns out, does relatively little. A kerb or a row of bollards does a great deal.
Put together, the picture is hard to argue with. Protected lanes save lives, cut emissions, ease congestion, and often return their cost within a year. For cities still treating them as a luxury or a nuisance, the data suggests they are one of the best value investments a transport budget can make.
