Some wrestling careers begin with national rankings, powerhouse high schools, and expectations that a wrestler will eventually compete at the highest levels of the sport.

Chris Mecate’s story was different.

His path was built through competition, setbacks, opportunity, and a willingness to prove himself every time he stepped on the mat.

Long before Mecate became a two-time NCAA Division I All-American, four-time NCAA qualifier, Division I coach, junior college coach, and professional MMA fighter, he was a California youth wrestler beginning to make a name for himself.

Mecate was a California Triple Crown winner as a youth wrestler, but his development took another turn when he moved from La Habra, California to Redlands, California area during junior high school years.

That move eventually led him to Redlands East Valley High School, where Mecate began building a career that would make him the most accomplished wrestlers in school history.

Redlands East Valley was not traditionally viewed as one of California’s elite wrestling powers. It was not a program that carried the same national reputation as some of the state’s established wrestling dynasties.

Mecate didn’t seem concerned.

He built his own reputation.

Nevada high school wrestling continues to grow in competitiveness, standing proudly as one of only five states in the country—alongside Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Idaho—that permits two grapplers to represent their respective schools at the regional and state levels. With many local squads frequently traveling to California to battle premier competition, the Nevada 5A landscape is tougher than ever.

Based strictly on returning state points from last season (excluding incoming freshmen and transfers), here is the breakdown of the top 10 returning 5A wrestling teams in Nevada for the 2026–2027 season.

Every legendary dynasty has a humble origin story—a spark where grit, sweat, and determination begin to forge a powerhouse. For the Selma High School wrestling program, that story began in the late 1960s and 1970s. This first installment of our multi-part historical archive chronicles the foundational decade of Selma wrestling, tracing the program’s path from its early tournament hosting days through the close of the 1970s.

Poway High School standout and Virginia Tech commit Mario Carini put on a wrestling clinic this week, earning Simple Man Wrestling’s Wrestler of the Week honors following an undefeated performance at the Super Elite wrestling duals in Atlanta, Georgia.

Representing Team Thunder alongside high school teammates Matthew Orbeta and Arseni Kikinou, Carini anchored a powerful lineup that pushed all the way to the tournament finals before dropping a hard-fought 33-19 decision to Team Carnage. While Team Thunder settled for runner-up honors in the team standings, Carini’s individual dominance was the talk of the showcase.

Carini went a flawless 7-0 against an elite gauntlet of opponents, securing victories over standout state champions and finalists from California, Florida, Kansas, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.

Among his statement victories was a dominant 10-1 major decision over St. John Bosco’s Mason Savidan (wrestling for Team Cormier Trained). Carini, who captured a state championship last season at 175 pounds, handled the move up in competition against Savidan, a reigning California state runner-up at 190 pounds.

Carini also picked up a tactical 4-1 victory over Pennsylvania state champion Mario Hutcherson of Kiski Area High (wrestling for Team Dinasty). Hutcherson entered the matchup boasting an impressive career pedigree, including a 48-1 record last season and a 91-8 career mark.

The journey through Phase 2 of the California Top 100 Wrestlers project now moves into TIER 3 — Collegiate-Level All-Americans, a group representing another extraordinary level of achievement in the history of California wrestling.

TIER 3 is being examined through a series of separate articles covering the major collegiate divisions:

NCAA Division I
NCAA Division II
NCAA Division III
NAIA
NJCAA — Junior College
Each division will be evaluated on its own competitive terms while recognizing its unique historical significance and contribution to California wrestling.

The first installment examines NCAA Division I, the highest level of NCAA collegiate wrestling.

Winning an NCAA Division I championship or reaching the NCAA All-American podium represents the culmination of years of development at the high-school, national, and collegiate levels. For California wrestlers, those achievements provide another important measure of competitive excellence beyond the CIF State Championships.

Just as importantly, the NCAA Division I data reveals something else: a wrestler’s high-school résumé did not always predict how high that wrestler’s career would ultimately rise.

Some California NCAA champions were dominant state champions.

Others were state finalists or medalists.

Some qualified for CIF State without reaching the podium.

And a few did not qualify for CIF State at all.

That diversity is an important part of the story.

The journey through Phase 2 of the California Top 100 Wrestlers project now moves to TIER 2 — Olympic & Senior-Level World Team Members, a group representing another extraordinary level of achievement in the history of California wrestling.

If TIER 1 represents the international elite—California wrestlers who reached the highest levels of Olympic, Senior World or other recognized senior-level United World Wrestling competition and earned an Olympic or Senior World-level medal—TIER 2 recognizes wrestlers who reached that same international stage but did not capture an Olympic or Senior World medal.

For purposes of this project, TIER 2 eligibility includes wrestlers who represented their country on an Olympic Team or Senior World Championship Team, as well as wrestlers who were officially designated as Olympic Team alternates following the final national Olympic selection process. An official Olympic alternate is considered to have met the Olympic-level threshold for TIER 2 because that designation demonstrates that the wrestler advanced through the highest level of the country’s Olympic selection process and emerged as the next athlete in that Olympic position.

California has long been recognized as one of the premier wrestling states in the nation, producing generations of athletes who have excelled at the high school, collegiate, national and international levels. Within that larger history, however, is a very small and exclusive group whose accomplishments distinguish them from virtually everyone else. TIER 1 — Olympic, Senior World & UWW International Elite represents the absolute pinnacle of California wrestling achievement.

This article represents the second phase of an ongoing effort to identify the Top 100 California wrestlers from the first CIF State Wrestling Championships in 1973 through the present day. The objective is to develop a historically significant and statistically defensible list recognizing the exceptional wrestlers California has produced over more than five decades.

Rather than relying solely on reputation or personal opinion, the project examines the highest levels of achievement attained by each wrestler, including CIF State Championships and medals, national high school honors, collegiate championships and All-American honors, national championships, international accomplishments, Senior World Championships, UWW World-level competition, World Cup competition and Olympic achievement.

The ultimate goal is to recognize the top wrestlers across four designated tiers, creating a historical representation of California wrestling talent spanning more than five decades. The four-tier structure evaluates wrestlers according to the highest level of achievement they ultimately attained, recognizing both extraordinary international accomplishments and the tremendous depth of talent beneath them.

With that combination of established talent and new additions, the 2026–27 season could provide some of the most competitive junior college wrestling in recent years.

From returning champions looking to defend their titles to newcomers hoping to make an immediate impact, there will be plenty of wrestlers worth following throughout the season.
