Sports Hall of Fame

BAAC is proud to announce that Maz has been inducted into the Burlington Sports Hall of Fame.

Every year, the City of Burlington recognizes athletes and builders whose contributions have made a lasting impact on sport — both locally and internationally. These individuals include Olympic champions, professional athletes, and respected sport leaders who have helped shape Canadian sport.

The selection committee deliberates for months when they select the inductees. Maz was selected along with 5 other incredible Burlington athletes and builders -

Ted Goveia - General Manager - Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Chris Giokos - Lead Player - Ottawa Rough Riders
The Oldershaws - Olympic Medalists Sprint Canoe-Kayak

Maz was recognized as both an athlete and a builder, as well as his lifelong commitment to elevating the Burlington sports community.

He was recognized for his distinguished athletic career including:

• 5x Professional Middleweight Champion
• 8x Amateur World Championship Medalist
• May 2009 – promoted the 1st PRO kickboxing show in 10 years
• Oct 2009 – promoted the first world championship fight in Burlington

The committee also recognized his leadership in founding the first government-recognized kickboxing association (WAKO Canada), and being at the forefront of growing the sport across Canada.

From 2008–2026, the Bay Area Athletic Club produced 18 World Championship kickboxing medalists — the highest number of medalists from any Canadian club during that period.

Beyond titles and accolades, BAAC has become a pillar of community impact through youth programs, mentorship, and service throughout Burlington. He has inspired countless young athletes through discipline, confidence, and compassion.

Maz had just returned from coaching a Canadian team in Turkey, completed a government sport application at midnight, and in true Maz fashion - finished teaching a 5 - 10-year-old class - before rushing to the ceremony!

Because for him, it has always been — and always will be — about the athletes.

BAAC is incredibly proud of Shannon!

Shannon first joined BAAC two years ago when she enrolled her daughter, Holly, in our Mighty Kids Program. Since then, she has become one of the most dedicated and hardworking members of our ROCKIT class.

Many people know Shannon as an exceptional volunteer at BAAC, where she regularly supports WAKO Canada competitions and dedicates countless hours to ensuring our tournaments run smoothly. From the National Championship to development tournaments Shannon is a staple WAKO Canada volunteer leader.

Her commitment to volunteerism and community involvement has positively impacted many lives in sport and beyond.

Shannon serves as the Director of Outreach Services at Open Doors, a non-profit organization where she has helped develop and grow programs that support individuals and families through food bank services, clothing assistance, and hot meal programs.

Shannon was recently honoured with the prestigious Paul Harris Award by the Rotary Club. The Mayor of Burlington was in attendance to present this distinguished recognition.

“What truly stands out about Shannon is that her work is rooted in compassion. In a world where kindness can sometimes feel rushed or overlooked, she reminds us what genuine community leadership looks like. Burlington is stronger because of her.”

— Nancy Smaruk, President of Rotary Burlington

We are incredibly proud of Shannon and remain inspired by her dedication to uplifting others and building a kinder, more compassionate, and more just world.

Team BAAC on TOP!

Congratulations to fighters Jake and Dorian who represented BAAC at the National Championship this past weekend.

The WAKO Canada Nationals is the most competitive kickboxing event on the continent and our two athletes had outstanding performances.

Jake had a tough bout in his -63.5 kg division and he showed lots of heart. His opponent got the win and went on to win the finals.

Dorian entered both Kick Light and Ring Sport and walked away with one silver and a coveted National Championship belt. He had 3 bouts this weekend showing how focused and resilient he is.

A special thanks to Coaches Brody and Dave for supporting the team all weekend.

Awesome job welcome!

BAAC at the 2026OWG

The Ontario Winter Games is the most significant event hosted for Junior age athletes. It is also the pinnacle event for kickboxing in Canada.

BAAC played a major part in the Games.

Coaches Laila and Dave were selected to be provincial coaches and they did amazing work with their teams. They each coached athletes from across the province showing amazing dedication with each athlete they supported.

Dorian, Jake and Rhys all tried out for the limited spots on the team and were all accepted. They each showed great heart, skill and most importantly the highest level of sportsmanship throughout the 4 day tournament.

All BAAC Coaches are truly proud of how our athletes represented the club showing the values of leadership and excellence. We received many compliments from provincial coaches and officials on how our BAAC athletes displayed amazing respect and support to everyone at the Games.

A special thanks goes out to Stephanie to leading our medical team and making sure all athletes were taken care of. And a huge thanks to Chris and Natalia for capturing this amazing moments at the GAMES
for everyone to cherish.

Everyone at the club and in Burlington is proud of everyone!
