Penny Chess Club Student Larry Yang Helps Team BC Win National Third Place

At the 37th Canadian Chess Challenge recently held in Winnipeg, outstanding Penny Chess Club student Larry Yang represented British Columbia in the Grade 7 division and helped Team BC secure an impressive third-place finish nationally.

As one of Canada’s most prestigious youth chess competitions, the Canadian Chess Challenge brings together top young chess players from across the country each year. This year’s national finals featured intense competition and a very high level of play.

Throughout the tournament, Larry Yang demonstrated strong chess skills, composure under pressure, and excellent sportsmanship, making an important contribution to Team BC’s success. His achievement reflects not only his dedication and hard work, but also Penny Chess Club’s commitment to developing young chess talent.

Penny Chess Club warmly congratulates Larry Yang and Team BC on this outstanding accomplishment and looks forward to seeing Larry achieve even greater success in the future.

Penny Chess Club Student Zachary Liu Wins U15 Runner-Up at Pan American Youth Chess Championship and Earns CM Title

At the recently concluded “XV Pan American U7-U17 Chess Championship Absolute and Female” held in El Salvador, outstanding Penny Chess Club student Zachary Liu delivered an impressive performance in the U15 division, finishing as runner-up with an undefeated score of 4 wins and 5 draws. With this achievement, he also earned the prestigious CM (Candidate Master) title awarded by FIDE.

The championship brought together many of the strongest young chess players from across the Pan American region, making the competition highly competitive. Throughout the nine rounds, Zachary demonstrated consistent form, strong technical skills, and remarkable composure under pressure, ultimately securing second place without losing a single game.

This accomplishment marks an important milestone in Zachary’s chess career and reflects the strength of Penny Chess Club’s youth training program. The club remains committed to providing high-quality coaching and international competitive opportunities to help young players reach their full potential on the global stage.

Penny Chess Club warmly congratulates Zachary on his outstanding achievement and looks forward to seeing him continue to excel in future international competitions.

Penny Chess Club Launches “Student of the Month” Program to Celebrate Student Excellence

Starting in 2026, Penny Chess Club has officially introduced its “Student of the Month” program, open to students across all six campuses in the Greater Vancouver area. The initiative aims to recognize not only chess improvement but also well-rounded personal development and positive character.

Students are evaluated based on multiple criteria, including Improvement, Sportsmanship & Attitude, Tournament Performance, Helping Others, as well as Effort & Attendance. Coaches nominate and assess candidates based on their regular performance and engagement, with final selections made through a comprehensive evaluation process.

The winners for January through March 2026 have now been announced. Penny Chess Club warmly congratulates all award recipients for their outstanding achievements both on and off the chessboard. These students exemplify excellence, dedication, and positive sportsmanship.

PCC will continue this monthly recognition program to inspire more students to strive for progress, stay engaged, and contribute to a supportive and motivating learning environment.

At the recently concluded Vancouver Chess Festival 14, coaches and students from PCC delivered outstanding performances, achieving impressive results across multiple sections.

In the top-tier Open section, PCC coach Le Quang Long (IM) demonstrated exceptional consistency and skill to secure the championship title, highlighting his high-level competitive strength and experience. Meanwhile, PCC student Zachary Liu performed admirably among strong competitors, finishing in an impressive 5th place.

In the U2100 section, PCC student Ryder Hsu also delivered a strong performance, earning 5th place and showcasing solid technique and competitive composure.

These results reflect not only the professional guidance of PCC’s coaching team but also the continuous progress of its students. PCC remains committed to developing talented players and achieving further success in future regional and international competitions.

At the conclusion of the 2026 BC Chess Challenge Provincial Championship finals held yesterday, PCC students delivered outstanding performances and achieved remarkable results:

• Grade 7: Larry Y. – Champion
• Grade 8: Nathan Y. – Runner-up
• Grade 11: Aadit A. – Champion; Joey X. – Runner-up
• Grade 12: Shaunavon M. – Runner-up

The competition brought together top student players from across the province, featuring intense and high-level matchups. PCC students stood out in multiple categories, demonstrating strong fundamentals, excellent composure, and impressive competitive spirit.

According to the event schedule, all champions will represent BC at the 37th Canadian Chess Challenge National Finals, to be held in Winnipeg this May. We look forward to their continued success on the national stage.
