kindness. courage. excellence.
What a busy start to our season. Last weekend all the best athletes aged 12-17 competed at the First BC Team selection tournament of the season. Honoured to be first among dojos this year, especially with such a strong team in the province. Lots more work to do but thankful for all the support.

We are happy to welcome Akito Sensei to our dojo. Akito Sensei was a high school teacher in Japan and coached the high school karate team to great success. As a competitor he was a university team member of Tenri University in Japan and has extensive competition experience. His combination of teaching experience and technical abilities are an excellent addition to our program. Welcome to the team! kids
✨ Celebrating Our Beautiful BKA Community ✨
BKA made their presence known at the 2025 Canada Open. Normally we spotlight those who medalled, but today we want to acknowledge everyone—because every effort, medal or no medal, deserves recognition.
💙 Melissa came out early to coach and she even had time to compete
🎶 Jade proudly sang the National Anthem in her beautiful voice
🙌 Sensei Josh and Sensei Samaneh made sure everyone was ready to compete
🔥 Julia, even with an exemption, came out to support and warm up the BKA team
💪 Almost all the athletes showed up early to cheer and warm up their teammates
👏 Felix along with other parents and athletes volunteered
📸 Sharon volunteered to take photos
🌟 Parents and siblings stayed all day to support the BKA kids (it was a long day)
And of course, our youngest competitors gained invaluable experience surrounded by this incredible energy.
This is what makes BKA special—the community Sensei Sandeep has fostered. Thank you to every parent, sibling, volunteer, and teammate who showed up. You make this journey worth it.

One of the benefits of being at a dojo is all the international friends that you meet. Kyoko is training with us from Japan, and she has brought great energy and an amazing attitude to the dojo. It’s been great having her practice with us!

Just want to take a moment to appreciate Sensei Brian Purvess and his amazing students at Westwood Karate. As a fellow competitive dojo we always admired the skill and tenacity of his students. While initially feeling some sadness when Sensei Brian decided to close his doors and move away from the lower mainland, we are extremely honoured that many of his students have made their way to our dojo. We are so thankful for these great new students who work extremely hard, and thankful to their Sensei that produced some awesome black belts!
