I just did two Ergonomic/Posture workshops in our local highschools. I thought this topic would be a tough sell as most of the students are around 16/17 and likely don't have any posture related aches and pains. I was totally wrong. Understanding the relationship of your bones and gravity is important and with about 8 hours of sitting each day, students are not immune to pain in the back. I wish we could make sitting a temporary rest from movement and change from resting on a chair to chasing the next position (which will always be your best position) every 15-20 minutes.
Did you know that your posture is a result of your nervous system's approach to handling a load?
By default, nature gives us slight curves in the spine. They are big enough to act like a spring and small enough to keep us straight.
Gravity constantly tries to increase those curves. If your nervous system lets go in the upper part, you become hyper-kyphotic. If it lets go in the lower part, you become hyper-lordotic. A combination of these two is also possible, resulting in a hyper-kypholordosis.
If, in the fight against gravity, your nervous system overacts in the lumbar region, you develop a swayed back. If this overaction spreads higher, you end up with a flat back. If your base tension is even higher, you develop a military posture.

Terry Fox is my favorite Canadian Hero.
Everything about him says grit, determination, hope and resilience. 44 years ago this young man ran 5,373 kilometers between April 12th and September 1st on one leg - that is an unbelievable accomplishment!

Awesome turnout last night! So excited about my 'run/walk' group as they continue to run longer every week. I am convinced that this is the year (and it would be a first) that the entire group pulls through and get to the 10minute mark.

I wish I had a dollar for every time someone is afraid to 'bulk up' by lifting 15lbs weights.
