What makes a great athlete?

It’s their work ethic. Their grit. Their vision on the court, their speed off the line, their dedication to the team, and how they show up for practice every single day.

What a great athlete is has absolutely nothing to do with their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Being part of the 2SLGBTQI+ community doesn't change an athlete's stats, their hunger to win, or their ability to push through the grueling final minutes of a game.

When we allow outside noise or bias to dictate who gets to play, we don't just hurt athletes—we pull apart the integrity of the game itself. A scoreboard doesn't care who you love or how you identify; it only cares about the play you just made.

Drop a 🙌 if you believe the game should be open to anyone who is willing to put in the work! Be Proud of who you are!

One of the most dangerous manipulation tactic used to create a culture of silence? Gaslighting.

When an athlete, parent or coach brings forward a genuine concern about bullying or emotional abuse, toxic sport cultures don’t investigate—they protect themselves.

True Safe Sport means prioritizing accountability over a scoreboard.

The term gets thrown around a lot these days, but what does it actually look like on a sports team?

In sport, gaslighting happens when a person's reality, physical pain, or emotional safety is manipulated to protect someone else's ego or a club's reputation. It turns a legitimate concern into a personal flaw, forcing the person to doubt their own instincts. The worst outcome: it enables the abuser to continue.

To build a true , we have to learn how to spot the difference between toxic manipulation and healthy leadership.

➡️ Swipe through to see potential club scenarios and how a healthy, supportive response differs from institutional gaslighting.

Sports should be a powerful source of growth, connection, and empowerment—but only if our teams actively commit to inclusion. 🏳️‍🌈💪

Creating an inclusive environment isn’t just about kindness; it’s a direct commitment to athlete safety, mental well-being, and team success.

How can coaches, parents, and captains actively build a culture of belonging? It takes a deliberate playbook.

Here is your Safe Sport Allyship Checklist to implement this season:

📋 Clear Policies: Write anti-discrimination protections directly into your team’s code of conduct. Set zero-tolerance expectations for bullying at your very first parent/player meeting.
📋 Inclusive Language: Swap out gendered phrases for "team" or "athletes." Normalize asking for and respecting pronouns/chosen names.
📋 Education & Training: Equip staff and captains with allyship and mental health first aid training so they can confidently shut down toxic behavior or harmful language.
📋 Safe Spaces & Privacy: Advocate for gender-neutral changing options and set strict codes of conduct regarding locker room respect and privacy.
📋 Open Communication: Foster an environment where athletes trust you enough to have honest conversations. Consistently affirm that every athlete belongs.

Are we miscalling the plays on "manipulation" in sport?

Terms like gaslighting and DARVO get thrown around a lot lately—sometimes just to describe a tough practice or a simple disagreement.

But real manipulation is a systematic tactic that can destroy team culture if left unchecked. Over our next few videos, we’re breaking down what it actually looks like in sport:

➡️Gaslighting & DARVO

Why does this matter?
When we mislabel normal conflict as "manipulation," we dilute the word and accidentally minimize real abuse in sport.
