WHY DO WE LENGTHEN AT THE END OF CLASS?

You’ve worked your muscles, challenged your core and asked your body to move in ways it may not move during your everyday routine.

So at the end of class, we slow things down and create some length.

🧘‍♀️ BRING THE BODY DOWN
After a stronger part of class, slower stretches give you a chance to transition from working hard to a more relaxed state.

🦵 MOVE THROUGH YOUR RANGE
Stretches and Feet in Straps allow you to explore the movement available at your hips and legs without the same load you had earlier in class.

🎯 CONTROLLED MOBILITY
We’re not trying to force your body into a deeper stretch. We’re practising moving through your available range with control, alignment and awareness.

🩷 FEEL GOOD WHEN YOU LEAVE
That final stretch gives you a moment to check in with your body, breathe and notice how you feel compared with when you walked in.

AND FEET IN STRAPS?

The straps support the weight of your legs, giving you an opportunity to focus on hip mobility, pelvic stability and length through the legs while your body is supported by the carriage.

It’s the perfect way to finish what we started.

We strengthen → mobilize → lengthen → breathe.

Because Pilates isn’t just about how hard you can work.

It’s also about learning how to move well, recover and leave your body feeling better than when you arrived. ✨

WHY DO WE MOVE THE SPINE IN ALL DIRECTIONS?

Your spine was designed to move, not just sit upright all day.

At Club Pilates, you’ll move your spine through flexion, extension, rotation and lateral flexion — and there’s a reason for each one.

↪️ FLEXION
Rounding the spine helps us explore spinal articulation and control while strengthening the abdominals.

↩️ EXTENSION
Opening through the front of the body challenges the muscles that support the spine and helps us practise controlled spinal extension.

🔄 ROTATION
Twisting trains the body to rotate with control through the thoracic spine — important for everyday movements like reaching behind you or turning to look around.

↔️ LATERAL FLEXION
Side bending challenges the muscles along the sides of your trunk and your ability to control the spine asymmetrically.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER IN REAL LIFE?

Because life doesn’t happen in one position.

You bend down to pick something up.
You reach overhead.
You turn to grab something behind you.
You lean sideways to reach for something.

We want your spine to be strong, mobile and controlled in all the ways you actually use it.

Joseph Pilates believed in developing a body that was “supple and flexible” rather than rigid — and that idea is still at the heart of the method today.

So when your teacher asks you to round, arch, twist or side bend…

We’re not just stretching. We’re teaching your spine how to move.

WHY DO WE PLANK AT CLUB PILATES? 💪

Yes… we know planks can be spicy 😂
But there’s a reason we keep bringing them back.

A plank teaches your body to create stability through your centre while the rest of your body works around it.

🧠 YOUR CORE
Your abdominals and deep stabilizing muscles work to keep your spine supported and prevent your lower back from collapsing into extension.

💪 MORE THAN YOUR ABS
Your shoulders, arms, glutes and legs are all working too. It’s a true full-body exercise.

🎯 CONTROL
We’re not just looking for you to “hold” the plank. We want you to maintain good alignment, control your breathing and stay connected to your centre.

AND WHY DOES THAT MATTER OUTSIDE THE STUDIO?

Think about carrying groceries, pushing a heavy door, lifting something off the floor, reaching overhead or getting yourself up from the ground.

Your body needs to be able to stay strong and stable while your arms and legs move.

That’s what we’re training.

And while the modern plank isn’t a traditional classical Pilates exercise, the principles behind it fit beautifully with Joseph Pilates’ method — control, concentration, precision, breath and centering.

So next time your teacher says,
“Come into your plank…”

Remember: we’re not trying to torture you. 😂

We’re teaching your body to move with strength, control and purpose.

And yes… you’ll probably feel it tomorrow. 😉

WHY WE BRIDGE IN EVERY PILATES CLASS

Undo sitting. Build strength. Move better.

Bridging is more than a warm-up exercise — it combines spinal mobility, hip extension, posterior-chain strength and pelvic control in one movement.

🦴 SPINAL ARTICULATION
The controlled roll through the pelvis and spine encourages segmental spinal movement and awareness.

🍑 GLUTE & HAMSTRING RECRUITMENT
As the hips extend, the glutes and hamstrings work to create and control hip extension.

🧘‍♀️ COUNTERACT PROLONGED SITTING
Sitting keeps the hips in flexion for extended periods. Bridging brings the hips into extension while strengthening the muscles responsible for producing that movement.

🎯 PELVIC & CORE CONTROL
Maintaining a stable pelvis while the spine articulates challenges your ability to coordinate your deep core and lower-body muscles.

⚖️ POSTERIOR-CHAIN STRENGTH
Bridging strengthens the muscles along the back of the body — an important foundation for efficient movement and posture.

So when we bridge in class, we’re not just lifting the hips.

We’re teaching your body how to articulate, stabilize, extend and strengthen — all while undoing some of the effects of sitting.

And yes… that’s why we bridge EVERY. SINGLE. CLASS.

🦶 WHY DO WE DO FOOTWORK?

Those first few minutes on the Reformer aren’t just “getting the legs moving” — footwork is both a strength exercise AND our warm-up.

Here’s why it matters:

🔥 WARMS THE BODY
Repetitive movement increases circulation and gradually raises muscle temperature, preparing the body for the work ahead.

🦵 BUILDS LOWER-BODY STRENGTH
Footwork challenges the quads, hamstrings, glutes and calves against resistance.

🦶 PREPARES THE FEET & ANKLES
Different foot positions encourage controlled movement through the feet and ankles while challenging stability.

🎯 PRACTISES ALIGNMENT
We’re working on knee tracking, even pressure through the feet and maintaining control of the carriage.

🧠 CONNECTS THE BRAIN & BODY
The controlled, repetitive movement helps establish coordination, proprioception and awareness before we progress to more complex exercises.

💪 BUILDS MUSCULAR ENDURANCE
It’s not about how quickly you can move the carriage — it’s about maintaining quality and control through every repetition.

So next time you’re thinking, “Are we still doing footwork?” 😂

Remember: your body is warming up, your muscles are working, and you’re building the foundations for everything that comes next.

There’s a reason we start here. 🦶✨

Meet Robyn 💫

✨ How did Pilates find you?
I was asked if I’d ever considered becoming a Pilates teacher, and I’d only ever done a couple of classes! And that’s how this little journey began :-)

💪 What’s your all-time favourite Pilates movement?
My all-time favourite movements are probably feet in straps, mermaid and single-leg stretch.

🌿 What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?
Near the water, in nature or with my dogs.

🤫 What are two things members wouldn’t know about you?
I took my Royal Conservatory piano exams while growing up, which gave me a love of music of all kinds! I also played the flute and the trumpet. I’m quite shy when meeting new people—I’m an introverted extrovert!

❤️ Why do you love teaching Pilates?
I love connecting with people and helping them find a form of movement that feels good for their body.
