Hello Fortress Fans. Some very sad news to share in the Fortress world; Mel Folden (Mountain Mel), long time caretaker of Fortress, friend, father, grandfather, and 100% legend, peacefully passed away on November 12, 2025 surrounded by his family in Calgary. Mel was 84 years old.

The love that Mel had for Fortress is something that we will never forget, and his friendly smile and never ending stories were something that everyone who met him loved. It was an absolute honour to share this special place with Mel over the years and he will be immensely missed by all of us. Mel's legacy at Fortress will go on for ages, and we will never forget him. Sending our love and condolences to Mel's family and his many thousands of friends. At his family's request, it will be our honour to facilitate having Mel's ashes spread at his favourite place on earth, Fortress Lake.

Rest in peace Mel, you absolute legend!
