🚴 Thinking about starting a cycling club?
Starting a club is a great way to bring riders together, create opportunities for participation, and help grow cycling in your community.
If you're thinking about forming a Provincial Club with Cycling Alberta, there are a few important governance pieces to have in place:
📋 Become a non-profit society
Your club must be incorporated as a non-profit society, with a constitution and bylaws that establish how the organization operates.
👥 Build your membership
Membership must be open to individuals and club members must maintain valid Cycling Alberta membership.
🏛️ Establish a board
Clubs are governed by a Board of Directors and must hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM). This provides accountability to your members and helps ensure the club continues to operate beyond any one individual.
📚 Create good governance practices
Your club should establish bylaws, policies, and guidelines that provide consistency and can be passed from one executive to the next.
🛡️ Plan for risk and safety
Clubs must have a risk management plan and provide member waivers to Cycling Alberta.
🤝 Support responsible coaching
All coaches, managers, personnel, and volunteers are expected to follow the principles of the Responsible Coaching Movement.
Starting a club takes some work, but good governance helps create a club that can thrive for years to come.
