So well said Trish Michelle… Thank you! ❤️
“I've been struggling with the Edmonton Oilers' decision to sign Alex Formenton.
I watched this trial, and I came away deeply disappointed and uncomfortable with how they treated her. An acquittal is a legal outcome, but for me, it doesn't erase the behaviour, the circumstances, or the questions that remain.
If those same actions and circumstances appeared on someone's résumé when they were applying for almost any other job, I believe many employers would see them as a significant red flag and question whether that person was the right fit for their organization.
So why should professional hockey be held to a different standard?
The Oilers aren't simply hiring another employee. They are one of the most visible organizations in our community. NHL players and staff are role models to countless boys and girls, men and women who watch them, wear their jerseys, and look up to them.
That makes me wonder: What do we want our children to learn from the people we choose to put in positions of influence?
We talk about character, respect, accountability and making good choices. Those values should matter off the ice just as much as they do on it.
For me, this isn't about deciding what a court should have decided. It's about what an organization chooses to accept, what it chooses to stand behind, and what message that sends to the community.
I love the Oilers. That's why this decision is so disappointing to me.
There are thousands of hockey players of the same calibre with much better character looking for jobs in the NHL.
I believe professional sports organizations have an opportunity, and perhaps even a responsibility, to set a higher standard.
Can we not do better at selecting the people in these high profile positions? Hire the Zach's of the hockey pools.
I'm a sad oilers fan today.”

"We expect better from the Edmonton Oilers."
"As a sexual assault survivor and longtime Oilers supporter known as Mama Stanley, I cannot support or cheer for this team while Formenton remains an Oiler."
A Change.org petition started by Mary Loewen, known to fans as Mama Stanley, is calling on the Edmonton Oilers to reverse the signing of Alex Formenton. Formenton was one of five players charged in connection with a 2018 sexual assault allegation involving members of Canada's world junior hockey team. All five were acquitted in July 2025.
"This is not about abandoning the other players we have loved and supported," she says. "It is about holding the organization responsible for a decision it willingly made."
