Did some light sparring with Sifu Tony and explored how Wing Chun responds to high kicks and round kicks. Instead of staying at range, Wing Chun uses the shortest distance to the target. When a kick comes in, we block and step in at the same time, closing the distance while striking. This breaks the kicker’s balance and takes away their reach and power.
Once contact is established and both arms connect, the exchange naturally flows into Chi Sau, where we apply structure, sensitivity, and the continuous punches trained in Wing Chun.

Double Lap Da (雙拉打) is a classic Wing Chun drill that develops coordinated hand control, trapping skills, and close-range striking. It focuses on using lap sau (pulling or grabbing hand) with both hands in rhythm while delivering a direct strike. The goal is to train sensitivity, timing, forward pressure, and the ability to clear obstacles while attacking. It helps practitioners learn how to control an opponent’s arms, create openings, and strike efficiently in close-quarter situations.

Pat Sau ( 拍手 ) is one of the Wing Chun techniques used to maintain control of the center line. It redirects the opponent’s attack to the side while keeping your stance and structure steady. The movement creates an opening for a counterattack, in this case, Pat Da ( 拍打 )— a quick and direct strike that follows immediately after regaining the line.

Gwo Sau ( 過手 ) meaning “crossing hands,” is a Wing Chun training method that allows practitioners to apply techniques in a free-flowing exchange. It is a step beyond Chi Sau, focusing on timing, distance, control, and adaptability under realistic pressure. Rather than competition, Gwo Sau is about learning to stay calm, read energy, and refine skill through mutual practice. In this video, Sifu Tony demonstrates a few techniques in Gwo Sau.

Chi Sau ( 黐手 )
Chi Sau or Sticky Hands, is a traditional Wing Chun training exercise that develops sensitivity, reflexes, and close-range control. By maintaining contact with an opponent’s arms, practitioners learn to react instinctively to pressure and movement, blending defense and attack into one fluid motion.
Dan Chi Sau / 單黐手
Dan Chi Sau, or “Single Sticking Hands,” is a fundamental Wing Chun training exercise that develops sensitivity, reflex, and control in close-range combat. Practitioners train to feel and respond to an opponent’s energy rather than relying on sight, building fluidity, timing, and precision.
