Calgary Roller Derby

09/30/2026

September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Calgary Roller Derby pauses to honour the Survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home, and acknowledge the families and communities forever impacted.

As a league rooted in community, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and commit to continuing the work of listening, learning, and reconciliation — on and off the track.

As we take a moment, we must keep those impacted in our thoughts not once a year but every day.

The morning of September 18th,
we said goodbye to an incredible soul.

Steve 'Riceball' Recsky passed away surrounded by those who adored him and cherished him dearly.

Riceball had a way of making people feel seen and cared for. It's a rare trait for a person to have but he carried it with ease. Many people have crossed his path inside and outside of the derby community, and without a doubt, everyone has a story to tell from that encounter.

We are so thankful to have had him as a coach, teammate, and adopted derby dad.

From coaching A-level teams, inspiring the younger generation, and capturing incredible moments through a lens, to bringing undeniable funk and groove to the rink, he did it all.

We cherish every memory, every moment we had with this beautiful man and will continue to cherish the memories that fill our hearts with warmth, happiness, and inspiration. 🍁🍚

We hit $10,000 in Worlds Crowd Funding— and a deal’s a deal. 🎉

Tomorrow (Wednesday Aug 19) at 6:30pm, Jo is lacing up for 5km… and eating a donut at every single kilometre. That’s 5km, 5 donuts, one increasingly regretful decision, all live for your entertainment.

This is what happens when you hit a fundraising milestone with the Calgary Roller Derby AllStars: we make good on our promises. Every dollar gets us closer to Malmö for WFTDA Worlds — and every milestone gets weirder.

Tune in tomorrow to watch Jo run it off (and eat it back on). 🍩🏃‍♀️
