Renewable energy is the fastest-growing energy source in North America. In the USA alone, wind and solar generation has increased seven-fold since 2010.

Only 30 years ago in North America, power generation from wind and solar was virtually negligible, comprising only 0.1% of our electricity sources. Our economy largely relied on traditional power sources such as coal-fired plants, hydroelectric plants, combined cycle plants, and nuclear generation.

But today is a very different story. Renewable power generation presently accounts for 22.7 percent of utility-scale U.S. electricity generation, driven heavily by wind (10.5 percent) and solar (5.1 percent). This is nearly a quarter of all power generation across America, developed in a very short period of time.

Renewable energy leads all other energy sectors in growth rate across the U.S.. Job creation is this segment is impressive: wind turbine technician jobs are expected to grow by 50% from 2024 to 2034. By comparison, the average growth rate for all occupations is 3.1%, so the growth in wind power is around 16 times faster, and it makes wind technician one of the fastest-growing jobs in the country.

Congratulations to JG Green for recently completing the Tough Mudder Race in Toronto!

The Tough Mudder is obstacle course race, designed to test physical strength, mental grit, and teamwork. There are two different races. One is a beginner's race, requiring a 5-kilometre run with 10 or more obstacles. More experienced Mudders can also run a longer course, spanning over 15 kilometres with more than 20 obstacles.

The Tough Mudder is not for the faint of heart. Some of the obstacles include barb wire crawls, wall and cargo net climbs, in-water cage crawls, and running up very steep ramps, requiring others to help from the top. And believe it or not, at the very end of the longer race, there was even an obstacle called "Electroshock Therapy", where there are wires hanging down and some of them can deliver an electric shock, so it's best not to touch them, of course! ⚡ 🔌

JG Green is a very Tough Mudder, and amazingly, he completed both the 15k and 5k courses. We admire his style. He speed-walked each course, completing as many of the obstacles as he could, while also taking the time to encourage and help others.

Here at LiftWerx, we are proud to employ a high-performing team of people who have a zest for life and adventure. Thanks to JG for Raising the LiftWerx Flag!

Here's a glimpse of the new LiftWerx Academy, which is currently in development in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Structural work is ongoing. But starting in early 2027, this new facility will be utilized for the following types of employee training:

💡 Onboarding of new employees
💡 Basic rigging
💡 GWO climb training and high-angle rescue
💡 LOTO and trouble-shooting
💡 Assembly and operation of up-tower cranes

Our work is complex. This new Academy will provide our employees with the opportunity to learn our technology in a safe, controlled, and highly-effective manner. This will minimize the need for on-the-job training, and will allow our technicians to hit the ground running when they head to the field.

The LiftWerx Flag of Adventure has been raised at the Mulino Spagnolo (the "Spanish Mill"), located in Orbetello, Italy! It's a round stone tower standing in the western Lagoon of Ponente, and it's the town's best-known symbol. Posing with the LiftWerx Flag is Glen Aitken.

This wind turbine is truly remarkable, not only because it's proudly standing after 600 years. It's also amazing from an engineering standpoint, because it is designed to grind grain using a combination of both tidal power as well as wind power. When winds are low, and the rotor doesn't turn, the mill could still be driven by water, using tidal currents flowing through the lagoon. This didn't happen from the beginning. It was originally built to run purely on tidal power, for only a few hours per day. The windpower upgrades were added around 150 years later.

Because this windmill could run on wind or on tidal currents, grain grinding continued even on calm days. This mattered strategically: centuries ago, the garrison town could make its own flour if enemies cut it off.

Today, standalone modern wind turbines are not able to produce power when the wind isn't blowing. But this one, built many centuries ago, was capable of doing that, which provides some insight into the ingenuity of the Italians during the Renaissance Period. It is only recently that we are starting to use similar technologies, by combining wind power, solar power, and battery storage to produce consistent power on an industrial scale. But although we are capable of this, we are not doing it with standalone turbines.

Originally, this was one of nine mills, but 600 years later, unfortunately this is the only one of the nine mills that survives. Sources don't record exactly when or how the other eight were lost.

This last surviving relic no longer works, and it might be in need of some large corrective repairs. It would probably benefit from a LiftWerx main bearing exchange and possibly a gearbox exchange. And the blades also appear to require some repair as well!

Here's a view that we don't see every day.

You might assume that this view was taken with a drone, but it's not.

In the region of the USA, we often have up to five large corrective teams working in the same vicinity at the same time. Sometimes, they are even working on the same wind farm. All of our teams are safely working with crane-less technology.

This week, we had two LiftWerx RotorHook™ teams that were working only three miles (5 km) from each other. Working at a height of 114 meters, which offers a wonderful bird's eye view, this is close enough that the teams could easily monitor each other's progress.

These teams are exchanging wind turbine hubs and main bearings. In this photo, Team Kronos is hoisting a rotor on a 114-meter tower, as viewed at the same hub height by Team Kraken.

Keep up the great work, guys! We are proud of you.

The LiftWerx Flag of Adventure has been raised at the famous waterfront of Virginia Beach! Proudly raising the Flag are Carl Heinrich and his lovely wife, Barbara.

According to the Guiness Book of World Records, Virginia Beach holds the title of the longest pleasure beach in the world. The endless beach sand extends for a total of 61 kilometers (38 miles) of coastline. Not surprisingly, this is a very popular beach holiday destination in the southeast USA.

Here at LiftWerx, we are delighted to employ a high-performing team of people who have a zest for life and adventure. Thanks to Carl and Barb for raising the Flag!

After only six years of service, it was decided that it was time to upgrade our very first GenHook™ crane (unit 621) and our second-oldest RotorHook™ crane (unit 654). Last week, our maintenance team in Cambridge successfully completed this rigorous program, which included the following major upgrades:

💡 New winch drum
💡 New hoisting wire rope
💡 New boom sheaves
💡 New hook block sheaves
💡 New load-measuring sensor
💡 New wire rope reeving system
💡 Software upgrades

This week, this fully refurbished crane set, now better than ever, is being recommissioned and load-tested on our test tower. After completion, the equipment will be re-deployed to its next project on the tropical Pacific island of Maui.

To our leader Stefan and the rest of the maintenance team: thanks for breathing new life into this equipment! We are proud of you.

The LiftWerx Flag of Adventure has arrived at another unique location! This time, the Flag has been raised at Phantom Lake, a remote wilderness lake located around 100 kilometres north of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Proudly bearing the Flag is LiftWerx's Jay Bolhuis and his daughter, Amy.

Phantom Lake is a sub-alpine lake tucked deep in Canada's Sunshine Coast Mountains. It's glacial and snow-fed. Water feeds in from the glaciers of Mount Jimmy and Tzoonie Mountain at one end, while at the other end, it drains out over a towering cascading waterfall.

Like many glacial lakes in Canada's cordillera regions, the water colour is a stunning emerald colour. This radiant colouring is caused by fine "rock flour", a fine sediment which is deposited in the water by glacial ice, which stays suspended in the water and scatters light, producing that milky blue-green hue.

Despite the fact that it's located relatively close to a major city, Phantom Lake is a true wilderness lake. It has no official trails in, out, or at the lake, making it extremely difficult to access on foot. Ground access is a serious backcountry undertaking, requiring a five-day trip from Squamish over the Tantalus mountain range, involving heavy bushwhacking. There's essentially no permanent population or development around the lake, which is why most people, including Jay and Amy, prefer to arrive by float plane from the nearby town of Squamish.

Here at LiftWerx, we are proud to employ a high-performance team which is comprised of people with a zest for life and adventure. Thanks to Jay and Amy for Raising the Flag!
