If you’ve spent much time climbing in the Canadian Rockies, chances are Mt. Athabasca has been on your radar.

At 3,491 m, it rises directly above the Columbia Icefield and is surrounded by some incredible alpine objectives—Andromeda, Boundary Peak, Snow Dome and many more.

We spend a lot of time in this part of the Rockies. It’s an amazing place to learn glacier travel and mountaineering skills, put those skills into practice, and eventually take them onto bigger objectives.

But there’s more to these mountains than the climbing.

1. It’s a Canadian Rockies mountaineering classic

Athabasca is one of those mountains that represents a step into true alpine climbing.
Glaciers, crampons, ice axes, rope travel, changing snow and ice conditions, route finding and a high alpine summit all come together on one mountain.

For many climbers, objectives like Athabasca are exactly why they started learning mountaineering skills in the first place.

It’s one thing to practise those skills.
It’s another to use them to stand on top of a 3,491 m Rockies summit.

2. It sits beside one of the greatest alpine classrooms in Canada

Look around from Athabasca and you begin to understand why we spend so much time at the Columbia Icefield.

Athabasca. Andromeda. Boundary Peak. Snow Dome. And a massive expanse of glaciers connecting the landscape.

The Columbia Icefield is the largest icefield in the Canadian Rockies, and the surrounding terrain gives climbers an incredible progression—from learning how to move on snow and ice to tackling increasingly complex alpine objectives.

This is where skills become experience.

3. Climbers have been drawn to Athabasca for well over a century

The first recorded ascent of Mt. Athabasca was made in 1898 by J. Norman Collie and Herman Woolley.

Their climb was part of an era when European climbers were beginning to explore and map the high peaks and glaciers of the Canadian Rockies.

Imagine climbing here without the Icefields Parkway, detailed maps, modern forecasts, lightweight equipment or decades of accumulated route knowledge.

The equipment has changed dramatically.

The attraction of these mountains hasn’t.

4. But the history of thi

Your GPS knows where you are. But do you?

Phones, GPS watches and mapping apps have transformed how we travel in the mountains—but technology hasn’t replaced good navigation skills.

Knowing how to read a map, use a compass and understand the terrain around you can make you a more confident and capable mountain traveller.

In our latest blog, we look at why traditional map and compass skills still matter in a digital world—and why the best navigators know how to use both.

There’s a moment on almost every scrambling trip when the trail disappears, the terrain gets steeper, and you look up and think…

“Okay. What’s the best way through this?” ⛰️

That’s where good scrambling skills make all the difference.

Our Mountain Scrambling Skills Course is designed to help you move beyond simply following a route and start making confident decisions in mountain terrain — choosing your line, recognizing hazards, understanding weather, managing exposure, and moving efficiently when things get steep.

And sometimes the biggest takeaway isn’t a particular technique. It’s confidence.

One participant this season came into the course having never scrambled before and encountered more exposure than they’d ever experienced. With coaching and instruction along the way, they finished with new skills — and a much better understanding of how to move confidently through that kind of terrain.

Another participant told us the weather and route-finding instruction became some of the most valuable things they learned all weekend.

And then there was Yev, who summed up the experience rather well:

“The course increased my confidence, improved my skills, and unfortunately convinced me that signing up for more courses is a good idea.” 😄

That might be our favourite kind of problem.

If you’ve been hiking in the Rockies and are ready to start exploring the terrain beyond the trail, our upcoming Mountain Scrambling Skills Course is a great place to build the skills to do it well.

🥾 Route finding
⛰️ Terrain assessment
🌦️ Mountain weather
🧭 Decision-making
💪 Movement skills & confidence
🏔️ Plenty of time actually putting it all into practice in the mountains

What a fantastic day out with the Arc'teryx Prep Day Series!

It was awesome introducing a new group of climbers to the fundamentals of outdoor rock climbing—from tying in and belaying to moving confidently on real rock. Seeing beginners build skills and confidence throughout the day is what it's all about.

We're grateful to partner with Arc'teryx to help make these experiences possible and can't wait for more days in the field together.

A huge thank you to Cody Shimizu for capturing the day.

Mountain Skills Semester 08/05/2026

𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀: 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗡𝗼𝘄?

One of the best measures of a program isn't just what happens during the semester—it's where it takes you afterwards.

We recently caught up with a couple of Mountain Skills Semester alumni, and their stories remind us that the skills you build here go far beyond the mountains.

🏔️ Jeff joined the Mountain Skills Semester after leaving a career in finance, unsure if life in the mountains could become more than just a passion.

Seven years later, he's living that dream as a full-time mechanized ski guide and preparing for his first heli-ski guiding season.

"The tools gained through the course set me up for success... I don't think I would have succeeded without the Fall Semester."

He also credits the instructors for helping every student reach their individual goals.

"Grant really keyed in on each student and what they were after and what they needed to work on to reach their next goal."

🌿 Phil came to the program looking to build solid mountain skills, but left with something even bigger—confidence.

Today he's completing an Outdoor Pursuits Instructor program and becoming a kayak and SUP instructor, with sailing instruction next on the horizon.

"The program planted the seed for my current career shift. I started to believe in myself a lot more—that I could achieve things I had doubted for many years."

When asked what he'd tell someone considering the program today, his answer was simple:

"An amazing opportunity that may well plant the seed for changes in your career or for the foundation of a future career."

Whether your goal is to pursue a career in the mountain industry, become a stronger and more confident backcountry traveller, or simply challenge yourself in an unforgettable way, the Mountain Skills Semester is designed to help you take that next step.

Our Fall Mountain Skills Semester is coming up, and applications are still open. If this season isn't the right fit, keep us in mind for upcoming programs offered in both the Spring and the Fall—your mountain journey has to start somewhere.

"Our son did the Youth Intro to Mountaineering and it was the most amazing experience of his life! He spoke incredibly highly of both his guides and the experience. From a parent's perspective, we felt very well informed and that he was in the best hands possible for a week on the glaciers." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

It's feedback like this that reminds us why we love introducing the next generation to the mountains.

Our latest Youth Intro to Mountaineering program was an unforgettable six-day adventure on the Wapta Icefield. The group hiked into Bow Hut before immersing themselves in the fundamentals of mountaineering—learning ice axe techniques, self-arrest, glacier travel, rope systems, snow and ice anchors, crevasse rescue, and rope ascension.

With excellent summer snow conditions, they put those skills into practice every day, travelling confidently across glaciated terrain and celebrating successful ascents of Mount Olive and Mount Gordon. It was inspiring to watch each participant grow throughout the week. From their first steps on snow to travelling as a rope team and tackling challenging terrain, they embraced every opportunity to learn with enthusiasm, determination, and plenty of smiles.

A huge congratulations to this fantastic group—we hope this is just the beginning of many mountain adventures to come!

What do you really learn on an alpine climbing program?

It's more than knots, anchors, and rope systems. It's about trust, teamwork, decision-making, and discovering what you're capable of in the mountains.

We're honoured that Bronwyn from Mountain Life Media joined us on one of our Intro to Alpine Rock programs to experience it firsthand and capture what makes these days in the mountains so meaningful.
