Field Nowcasting: Reading the Mountains in Real Time 06/11/2026

In the backcountry, conditions can change faster than any forecast can predict. That's where field nowcasting comes in—the art and science of reading the mountains in real time.

From cloud development and wind patterns to snow surface changes and subtle environmental clues, experienced mountain travellers are constantly gathering information and adapting their decisions based on what they observe in the field. It's a critical skill for anyone venturing into the mountains, whether you're hiking, climbing, skiing, or mountaineering.

In our latest blog, we provide an overview of how guides and mountain professionals use field nowcasting to make informed decisions and manage risk in changing mountain environments.

Grillmair's Chimney! Mt Yamnuska 5.6

One look at these photos and you'll understand exactly how this climb got its name! 😅 Tight, enclosed rock, squeeze-through moves, and just enough space to keep things interesting.

A classic Rockies adventure that can feel more like climbing inside the mountain than on it.

Who's up for the squeeze?

Two days, one incredible team.

This week we wrapped up our Summer Guide Staff Training, an important part of our commitment to guide development and guest safety. We run staff training twice each year, bringing our team together to review procedures, refine skills, and prepare for the season ahead.

Day one was spent in the classroom reviewing operations, emergency procedures, policies, risk assessments, and best practices across our programs. Day two moved into the field, where our team split into hiking operations, rock guiding, and alpine guiding groups for discipline-specific training, technical development, and scenario-based learning.

Staff training is a significant investment of time and resources, but we see it as an investment in our guides, our company, and the experience we provide our guests. Continuous learning and professional development are essential in the mountain environment, where strong decision-making, technical competence, and teamwork matter every day.

Beyond the technical training, these days are also an opportunity to connect as a team, share knowledge, learn from one another, and strengthen the relationships that support successful programs throughout the season.

To cap it all off, we wrapped up the week with our annual Spring BBQ and basketball game—a long-standing tradition and a great chance to celebrate the team before the busy summer season begins.

A huge thank you to our guide team for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to continuous improvement. We're excited for the summer ahead!

On Sunday, a couple of teams set out for Mt. Athabasca at 3:45am under light rain. By 5am the precipitation had eased somewhat, but as the team gained elevation, rain transitioned to snow and conditions deteriorated.

Once on the glacier, north winds began gusting strongly and visibility deteriorated. Fresh snow accumulated, up to 20–30 cm, in wind-loaded features. At the nunatak, guides observed enough uncertainty regarding potential wind slab development on the ramp that the decision was made to turn around and reroute to Boundary Peak instead.

These are the kinds of days that define real mountain education.

Not every successful day in the mountains ends on the summit you originally planned for. Sometimes success looks like:
• reading the terrain honestly
• adapting to changing conditions
• making conservative decisions early
• and choosing the objective that matches the reality of the day

Boundary Peak still delivered a memorable day in the mountains, with valuable learning for the entire team.

For the guides and students alike, days like this are an important reminder that good mountaineering is built on judgment, not just summits.
