Still slogging away on The Registry (for the 5,401 turbo Regals built in 1984).
If you own one of these unique rides and would like to join our community (over 600 rides in the Registry so far), please reach out to me and I will reply with what it is all about. I am not a business and never will be. A copy of your SPID and a pic of your ride would be great. [email protected]
1984 HOT AIR TURBO Regals including the 100 Canadian GNs
Phil Errett
My goal is to create a registry for all 1984 turbo Regals and to try to determine how many of the original 100 1984 Buick Regal Grand Nationals sold into Canada are still in existence.
My son has been chasing what he was told was a fuel line rattle for a year or so. Further research led him to believe fuel pump. GM tech did not agree, but, humored him and checked it out - what do you know, pump replaced and rattle gone - stick to your guns, you could be right!!! YEA!!
Oh yah - forgot - 2014 Vette.
In search of opinions; no matter how far off the wall.
I am in the process of replacing the heater core on my 84GN as the solder has failed on the copper inlet pipe.
I have disconnected all electrical and all bolts/screws (7 mm and 10 mm and philips head).
The U-Tube guy was no help as his A/C box cover damn near fell off. Mine remains solid.
Short of a long handles chisel to use on the side against the firewall, what would you folks suggest (all other sides of the cover pry up easily.
And yes I have gotten the screw inside the box visible when the screen is removed.

A recent contact basically asked why anyone would want to be in a Registry. In providing him an answer, I ran across some previous research I had done and decided I would resurface it here.
Enjoy.

MY START
My long term goal is to set up a registry for all 1984 turbo Regals. When I bought my 84 GN back in 1988, a gentleman named Ed Chapman had started a registry and I registered my GN. It was a method for sharing information on Grand Nationals at the time - not yet such a cult following as it is now.
This past year I went looking for the registry only to hit a dead end. An internet search for a GN registry turned up nothing as well.
I decided to start one, knowing it would not be a quick and easy task.
I bought a domain name and am having the site slowly built. I wrote to the GNX Registry administrator, D. Nigro and received a reply encouraging me to continue on.
If you haven't already done so, check out the GNX Registry site. It is a very interesting read (individual members rides info is protected).
Buick Regal WH1 Registry WH1 Buick Regals, also refered to as the "Designer Package", were offered on any T-Type Regal from 1984 to 1986. The WH1 package includes Black/Silver/Black paint and a rear deck spoiler. WH1's resemble the first paint/spoiler scheme as found on the original Grand National (see link at bottom of...
Must be the time of year - owners are thinking about the coming summer and their rides. As Registrar of the Registry, I search for new additions all the time and in the last thirty-eight days I have found 25 more 1984 turbo Regals to add to the Registry - brings our total to 601 - YEA! Just over 10%
By comparison the 1969 Charger Registry has .065% of the 69,000 built.
If you have a 1984 turbo Regal or know of someone who does, please consider sharing info with the Registry.

I would like to apologize for all the unrelated ads. The heading is Hot Air Turbo Regals and I have no idea where the hell all the extraneous ads come from. I will starting checking and deleting ever day now.

I have just published the update to The Registry; a registry for as many of the 5,401 turbo Regals built in 1984 as I can find (574 so far). Check your junk mail if it doesn't show up or write to me and let me know - [email protected]
My name is Phil Errett and this is one of my pages. I am a 1984 GN owner since October 1988. I am not a trained mechanic; however, I am a backyard wrencher that has experienced a lot of challenges of ownership. As such I have learned a few things over the years as my ride has just up and died from time to time.
Now that our rides have been on the road for 42 years since the fall of 1983, it is likely that some parts are prone to failure just because of age.
I am building a list of common failures for new to hot air Regal owners to be aware of and hopefully plan for.
I wrote to a couple of professional wrenchers that I respect and have gotten some general info to share so far.
These are situations that will cause your engine to just up and die, not to merely run badly, like bad ground or vacuum leaks.
1 - Crankshaft sensor - when this one fails your dash will light up like a Christmas tree and the engine will not restart no matter how many times you try - you will only succeed in dumping fuel into your crankcase (I know it happened to me in 1992). Solution - change sensor.
2 - Fuel Pump Relay - this will be an intermittent failure problem. Engine will crack and seem to be trying to restart, but won't. Try again a few hours later and the engine will fire and try to stay running and it will if you keep cranking. Drive it home and go buy a new relay - they are still readily available (I know it happened to me in 2023). Solution - change sensor.
3 - No start condition because ECM thru' a code for "coolant temperature abnormally low". Solution - change sensor.
OK so this is getting long winded. I have more to add, but, I ask you, whether you follow this page or have just been lurking, to chime in with your own age related failure stories.
