My favorite Tony Kasaki story.
Back in 2003, All-Star Wrestling was touring Nanaimo under Fabio and newcomer Joe Krantz. The show itself wasn’t particularly memorable, but what happened afterward certainly was.
A week earlier, I’d been knocked unconscious in Chilliwack. I was heavily concussed, sporting nine stitches in my eyebrow and a face swollen nearly shut. After the show, I got separated from the rest of the crew while bar hopping and somehow ran into Tony Kasaki, who was just as lost as I was.
Eventually, we found the group at a huge nightclub packed with bikers, rock music, and one very long lineup for the men’s washroom.
As we stood there waiting, Tony did what Tony always did.
He slipped into character.
Speaking in broken English, he marched straight past the lineup and into the women’s washroom.
Within seconds, women started pouring out laughing. A bouncer came over to investigate. Thinking quickly, I told him, “My foreign exchange student is in there. He doesn’t speak much English.”
Moments later, Tony emerged and walked right into the bouncer.
“What Kasaki do wrong?” he asked.
I tried explaining that he’d used the women’s washroom. Tony pretended not to understand. Finally, I pointed at the men’s washroom and said, “Pee-pee,” then pointed at the women’s washroom and said, “No pee-pee.”
Tony’s eyes lit up.
“Ahhh! Pee-pee! No pee-pee! No pee-pee!”
At that point, the bouncer realized he was being worked. Laughing, he shook his head and told Tony not to do it again before walking away.
The second he was gone, we both burst out laughing. So did the entire lineup that had witnessed the whole thing.
That was Tony.
He could turn standing in a washroom lineup into a performance. He could make complete strangers laugh. He could make an ordinary moment unforgettable.
Years later, most matches and road trips fade from memory. Moments like that don’t.
Tony loved wrestling. He loved entertaining people. Most of all, he loved being in character. Tony was a gimmick.
