I’m loving the messages from people who are shocked to see me on E. It’s something I never would have imagined either. While running the shop, if I was able to ride 6 hours in a week I was thrilled and there was no way you could pry me off my bike for those precious rides..
Then as “end of pro deal days” approached, I figured I’d grab an ebike with a vague idea that it might be useful for access to trail building areas that would be pretty brutal dragging Macleods or chainsaws to on my mebike..
Then after the ebike sat for a month because I had zero interest in it, I tried it and realized how much of a training tool it could be. I’ve struggled to do base miles: can’t stand the trainer and even on a gravel bike to fight the urge to push hard on climbs is impossible. My fitness suffered. Great VO2 from bouncing my heart rate of the limit multiple times per ride, but FTP sucked from my riding habits and getting worse because of age. I have no durability so ride days over an hour and I’m suffering: especially with cramps: don’t get me started on how full of s**t I think the electrolytes myth might be..
Now that I can imagine a wide open calendar to ride bikes, I can also imagine digging a deep hole where my fitness goes to s**t because I don’t get any recovery time, and no sub anaerobic rides: enter the Emtb..
When I realized I could go for a 2 hour ride, get 3 fast descents, work on my descent skills and my highest heart rate would be reached during the descents: that was exciting..
So, ironically, the ebike may play a role in me finally improving my fitness to be able to imagine racing enduro or BCBR again (and not on an ebike) without it being miserable… the ebike will hopefully help me get fit enough to not need the ebike.
