The Coquitlam Express considered candidates from across North America and even Europe for its next coach.
Turns out general manager Tali Campbell just had to look up.
Mark Coletta has come down from Burnaby Mountain, where he helmed the Simon Fraser University men’s hockey program the past 17 years, to take the reins of the BC Hockey League team.
For Coletta, who grew up in Burnaby, the timing of Coquitlam’s coaching vacancy couldn’t have been better: SFU just ended its club hockey program at the end of the 2025–26 season.
But returning to junior hockey is about more than just good timing, said Coletta, who spent a season as an assistant coach with the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles prior to landing the SFU gig in 2008.
“Junior hockey is a foundation across Canada,” he said of his next chapter. “We can prepare these guys to be the best they can be on and off the ice so that they can get to the next level.”
At SFU, Coletta won four British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League championships and was named its coach of the year in 2009 and 2010. He also helped create a non-conference team comprised largely of former junior players, which barnstormed across the continent playing against top NCAA teams like the University of Michigan and Boston University.
But hockey wasn’t a varsity sport at SFU, so the team survived on support from alumni and local businesses as well as the players own financial contributions.

The Coquitlam Express have announced the signing of 6-foot-4, 2007-born forward Igor Silchenko.
Silchenko spent the 2025-26 season with Loko Orsha, where he recorded 19 points in 15 regular season games before adding five points in three playoff games. The Minsk, Belarus native brings a combination of size, skill, and offensive upside to the Express lineup.
“We’re excited to welcome Igor and his family to the Coquitlam Express organization,” said Express General Manager Tali Campbell. “At 6-foot-4, Igor brings a unique combination of size, skating ability, and offensive instincts. He has been very productive against his age group, and we believe he has the tools to make an immediate impact in our lineup while continuing to develop into a high-level player.”
