Hello Everyone,
I hope everyone has had a good start to the year and is staying healthy and safe. I am writing to
inform you that our dojo will be closing down. COVID, rising insurance costs and scheduling
issues have made it difficult to continue. I set out to teach karate with the intent of making it
affordable and accessible while striving to keep the values of the traditional arts.
I would like to take a moment to thank everyone for giving me the opportunity to share an
activity that I love and have spent countless hours learning. Being a student of karate is more
than just learning the techniques, blocks, punches and kata; these lessons follow us into life. As I have learned from my sensei, I wanted to pass the lessons on to my own students. I hope that everyone will be able to walk away with something that will help them in life and their future endeavours.
While I wish things were different and we could continue, I thank you for your understanding.
This is where my path in budo (martial arts) has taken me. As a sensei, even though the dojo is
closed I will always be available for support, questions, or a cup of coffee - so do not be afraid to reach out.
Thank you again and know that I am proud of each and every one of my karateka.
Sincerely,
Sensei Toban

Hey everyone!
I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. All this isolation time is the perfect time to spend, practicing a neglected technique.
I will spend tonight working on my yoko geri and mawashi geri.
Take care!
6pm live class is coming up!
Hey guys hope everyone is doing well.
We are about to go live on YouTube for a quick refresher class. If you are a member of the Coquitlam dojo and haven't recieved your link, please message Sensei Toban.
A fun, light and intersting read is "Karate Do My Way of Life" by Gichin Funakoshi.
Funakoshi was the founder of the very popular Shotokan Karate. In his book Funakoshi tells stories that relate to his karate training, which include stories of his sensei: Anko Itosu and Asato.
Eventhough Shotokan and Butokukan are different styles, his stories offer a glimpse of what it was like to be a karateka during his era.
Quick update, earlier this week Coquitlam closed their community centres. Our classes will remain canceled until further notice.
Not having classes doesn't mean our karate training has to stop. Kata can be practiced at home. If space is an issue, work on a section of a kata. Focus on your ashi and dachi waza.
This time can also be used to read up on karate history.
Hoping everyone stays healthy, happy and safe.
Class will be cancelled tonight (January 14th) due the weather conditions.
