Well, it was a pretty quiet summer for men's fastball in the city of Cornwall, but that did not stop many of the leagues "die hards" from suiting up, elsewhere. Case in point: this past weekend's North Augusta Fastball League Tournament.

The Maitland Bandits (pictured), including CMFL vets, Jason Woodside, Steve McGillis, and Chuck Wert knocked off the defending champion, Domville Aces, including Darryl Beck and Hugh Murray, by a score of 7-4 in the tournament finale, in front of an ample crowd in North Augusta.

The fastball season is winding down for most, but we look forward to seeing everyone back on the diamond in 2016!

It's that time of year again, when a young (or old) man's thoughts turn to one thing: softball. Registration for the Cornwall Men's Fastball League will be taking place on Wednesday, May 6th from 5:30-7:00pm, at the Benson Centre.

This year, league games will take place on Thursday nights, only, and we are hoping to have as many teams as possible. In order to do so, we need a firm commitment from players, so please register as soon as possible

League fees this year are $100 per player (about the equivalent of two rounds of golf) and are used to rent the field, pay the umpires, and buy the softballs.

If you can't make registration night, but are still interested in playing, please contact Brian O'Neill at 613-936-1960.

Isaac "Izzy" Barr made his CMFL debut on Thursday evening, as Team Martell got past Team McGillis 4-2, in the regular-season finale.

Chuck Wert and Steve McGillis were the pitchers of record in this highly-contested affair. In the end, it was Team Martell veteran, Lorne Taillon's, two-RBI-single, in the top of the fifth inning, that cashed in the eventual-winning runs.

With the appearance, "Izzy" becomes the fourth member of the Barr family to suit up in CMFL league play, joining brothers Dillon and Grant, as well as father, John. When asked to comment on the trend of producing fastball players, the family's elder statesman clarified, "They get their athletic ability from their mother."

An infield error in the bottom of the seventh allowed Jason Woodside to score the winning run from third, as Team Martell defeated Team McGillis 12-11, on Thursday night at KGP.

The game began with an outburst of offence, with Team Martell jumping out to a 9-4 lead in the first inning. Team McGillis did not roll over, however, and battled back to tie the game at eleven, in the top of the seventh inning.

Perpetual starting pitcher, Jason Woodside, was handed the ball for Team Martell, while Chuck Wert got the nod for Team McGillis. Wert twirled three innings, but was relieved by Ben Herne, who was forced to make an early appearance, after Wert was struck in the solar plexus by a line shot, off of the bat of a Team Martell batter. X-rays were negative, and Wert is expected to make a full recovery. Attending physicians credited Wert's devout training regimen for his ability to escape serious injury, while another hospital official was overheard stating, "A lesser man would have been killed!"

Team Martell outfielder, Bryan Lamarche (pictured right), was re-activated off of the sixty-day DL and was reunited with long-time teammate, Lorne Taillon (pictured left). If you know the current whereabouts of either of these two men, please contact the CMFL.

The evening was punctuated by four homeruns off the bats of Team McGillis young guns, Jeff Laframboise (1), Jeff Piche (1), and Matt Sauve (2). Tests conducted after the game did not reveal any evidence of performance-enhancing drugs; however, they did yield an unusually high level of chicken wings.

The league's next game will take place on Thursday, August 21st. at KGP. Again, please note that game times for the remainder of the season have been changed to 7:00pm.
