Blinded by Light: The Forgotten Pit Ponies
At the turn of the 20th century, over 70,000 pit ponies were forced underground into coal mines across England, the United States, and Canada. Known simply as "pit ponies," these small, resilient horses became invisible cogs in the great machine of industrial progress.

They were born to roam open fields but spent their entire lives in darkness—pulling heavy coal carts through narrow tunnels, breathing in coal dust and damp air. Many never saw sunlight again after their first descent underground.

Miners in Eastern Canada told haunting stories of ponies brought to the surface after years spent in the mines. Some emerged completely blinded by the sunlight, their eyes unable to bear the brightness of a sky they had long forgotten.

To protect their eyes from falling debris and sparks, the ponies wore leather masks with tight eye openings. But no mask could shield them from the greater loss—the loss of light, freedom, and dignity.

Their labor was silent. They did not complain, they did not resist; they simply carried on, step by step, in eternal darkness until their bodies could take no more.
