The Cranbrook Eagles were in Prince George last week for a four-day novice training camp hosted and lead by Team BC Coach (and seven-time national champion, six-time Golden Glove champion, and 11-time Provincial champion) Kenny Lally alongside Team BC Coach (and four-time National medalist, five-time Golden Gloves champion, and eleven-time Provincial champion) Jag Seehra.

The camp was located at ‘Fir Haven Guest House’ and consisted of morning road work followed by high intensity drills lead by Kenny at the boxing club. Each afternoon had an educational session, followed by a warmup and sparring lead by Cranbrook Eagles Boxing Coach Tom White (former Inner-City boxer, two-time National medalist and Ringside World Champion).

Guest speakers included:

Sharlene Hoar, a certified mental performance consultant and high-performance sport scientist based in Victoria, BC. Her session was focused on “Mental Training”.

Seth Lenetsky is a Victoria based strength and conditioning coach who has worked with high level athletes (NFL, NBA, and MLB) held a session focused on “Best Practices for Fight Day”.

Jag Seehra of Inner-City Boxing demonstrated and discussed “The Proper Use of a Jab”, and former Inner-City boxer (three-time national gold medalist and current Coach of Undisputed Boxing in Calgary) Alex Legault went over the “Importance of Proper Nutrition”. Physiotherapist, Anna Marie Hepp (of Undisputed Boxing in Calgary) went over proper stretching. Additionally, Coach Tom White (currently a level 4 referee and judge for Boxing Canada) offered a question-and-answer period for athletes who were eager to learn about referee infractions and judges scoring.

Thank you going out to the trail-blazing former Inner-City Boxing Coach and come on—the ICON that is…Bob Pegues for his boxing expertise and for cooking all the meals (along with Inner City Coach, Mikey Brooks).

Appreciation going out to the crew at Fir Haven Guest House for the stunning grounds and next-level accommodations.

Very grateful for The Prince George Native Friendship Centre (PGNFC) for donating and providing transportation daily to the entire team to and from the boxing club.

Thank you to Tangena Marie Photography for her unmatched and very talented eye in capturing the essence of the camp and our team.

We hope we aren’t forgetting anyone, but if you had a hand in donating supplies, services, time, or effort to make this camp the extreme success it was—just know it is very appreciated by the Cranbrook Eagles family.

Lastly, to Kenny and Jag (and their supportive families)…thank you. Your passion and excitement for this sport ripples out and ignites a fire in everyone lucky enough to know you. The way you brought together multiple clubs and fostered a feeling of family in such a short amount of time was like capturing lightning in a bottle and we all look forward to the 2027 camp!

A few words from coach Tom White, “All of our boxers worked tremendously hard. It was a big eye-opener for most of them to see what high-level competition training is like, but each boxer gained confidence and knowledge along the way. Brantley Campbell and Layton Gronlund were unable to make a match so had to spar each other on the last day. However, they did have technical sparring and bag work with members of other clubs. Brantley and Layton both sharpened their skills and their fundamentals have come a long way by learning to keep their hands up chins down. They made a great deal of progress and kept a positive attitude throughout the camp. They are well on their way to becoming great fighters. Bo Thurow absorbed all the technical aspects of training and carried it through into the very last day. He has never fought so well, and he had a tremendous fight at the end of the camp. Much the same goes for Ty Colbeck. He gained confidence throughout this training and truly shined on fight day. Luther Sawatzky worked with Kenny on tightening up his defense. These are the tiny incremental changes that will hopefully pay big dividends later. Luther is transforming into a complete fighter by learning to fight off the back and the front foot, and by taking control of the center ring which he exhibited on fight day. Damian Lepsis had a round robin with two fighters. Damian showed great composure, taking control of the ring and utilizing a quick jab and ending each combination with multiple jabs. All our kids took what they learned from the camp and put it into the ring for the final fight. This camp was a huge success, they worked tremendously hard, and it was so beneficial. Well done boys!”

This September you will be able to take a walk down memory lane and find these very important additions around the boxing club’s various ‘Walls of Fame’…making visible all the hard work, dedication, and heart that these two coaches (and boxers) have poured into the sport (and the boxing club) for years.🦅🥊

Special thank you going out to Coach Kate McWhirter and Coach Tammy Bain for trusting us with your memorabilia and allowing us to share it with the club.

Thank you to Kootenay Kwik Print for the assistance.

For those curious, a little look into what to expect at this year’s training camp.

We are so excited to be hosting our first Novice Training Camp here in PG at the end of this month! We are even more excited to be working with our friends at Fir Haven Guest House where we will be providing accommodation to fighters and hosting camp meals. Thanks to Jason Peters for another great media write up:

Inner City Boxing PG is set to welcome young fighters to a comprehensive camp that will help them reach new levels of success inside the ring.

The four-day gathering starts on Aug. 27 in Prince George. It will focus on introducing novice boxers to high-performance training, with Inner City and Team B.C. coaches Jag Seehra and Kenny Lally setting the tone. The camp is suitable for open boxers as well.

“We have a lot of new relationships that we’ve made, some old relationships, and we want to just bring B.C. back together,” Seehra said. “That’s the way it used to be when we used to compete. We’d all train together and we’d all go to nationals together, and those relationships carried on. That’s what we want to bring back – that camaraderie.

“They’ll learn how hard the training is, and what it really takes to be a champion, what it takes to win a gold medal at nationals,” Seehra added. “That’s the main goal.”

Camp participants will start each day with roadwork. Then they’ll move into high intensity drills at the Inner City gym. Lally – a seven-time national champion – will lead those sessions, designed to maximize fitness specifically for boxing.

After a lunch break, each afternoon will feature an educational element. On opening day, Sharleen Hoar – a certified mental performance consultant and high-performance sport scientist from Victoria’s Coastal Human Performance – will give a presentation on the benefits of mental training.

Seth Lenetsky (Aug. 28), Seehra (Aug. 29) and Alex Legault (Aug. 30) will lead the other educational sessions.

Lenetsky, a Victoria-based strength and conditioning coach who has worked with athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB and national boxing programs, will take camp participants through a session called Best Practices for Fight Day.

Seehra, a four-time national medal-winner and 11-time provincial champion, will instruct on the proper use of the jab.

Legault – a former Inner City fighter and a three-time national gold-medalist who now lives in Calgary and runs Undisputed Boxing – will give a talk about the importance of proper nutrition.

Afternoons will also include controlled sparring sessions, with Cranbrook Eagles head coach and national medalist Tom White – another Inner City alumnus – monitoring the action. Each day, White will also lead campers through proper warm-ups.

This camp will be the first Inner City has hosted since Seehra and Lally rebooted it in early 2024.

“Last year was the first time that we dabbled with this idea, when we went to Edmonton for a camp,” Lally said. “We thought, why don’t we hold it here and try to make it a yearly thing? Our coach, he put on the best camps back in the day and they benefited us hugely in the success we had in the sport. So we want to bring some of that old-school stuff back.”

That coach is Bob Pegues. He now lives in Quebec but will be in Prince George for this camp. His official role will be camp cook – a nod to his skill for putting together unforgettable meals at camps during Seehra and Lally’s rise as youth boxers.

Pegues still enjoys creating perfect pasta feasts and firing up the barbecue at every opportunity.

“I cook here at home all the time,” he said. “I love to cook – it’s one of my hobbies.”

In the cheffing duties, Pegues will get help from Inner City assistant coach Mikey Brooks, himself a culinary artist.

Pegues says “it’s a great idea” for Seehra and Lally to hold the camp, and to bring all of the different areas of boxing expertise together.

“My first camp was probably 2003,” Pegues said. “I used to have the boxers at my home. Everybody would sleep in the basement and my wife would move out for the time of the camp. It was always great, and you can sit here in your rocking chair years later and think about the things you might have won or didn’t win, but it’s the memories you have of those kinds of things that stay with you.

“I was so fortunate being able to really live my dream in boxing, some of the places I went with Kenny and Jag, and Team B.C. and Team Canada, and the camps were always one of the more fun things we ever did,” Pegues added. “They bring the kids together, put us all on the same wavelength. The boxers get to the events and you can see them high-fiving each other and being buddy-buddy. And some of them are lifelong friends now for sure. So it’s always good, always lots of fun to hold these camps.”

Seehra and Lally expect to have close to 40 participants at the camp. Twenty of them will stay at Fir Haven Guest House, which sits on five acres of property in the Blackburn area of the city. Rooms are also booked at the Pomeroy Inn & Suites, walking distance from the Inner City gym.

Boxers who stay at the hotel are welcome to attend all functions at Fir Haven.

For many of the fighters, the camp will be a stepping stone toward the B.C. provincial championships and B.C. Bronze Gloves at the end of September in Chilliwack.

The Cranbrook Eagles competition class has been hard at work all summer in preparation for the ‘2026 Novice Training Camp’ hosted by the War-dogs of the Inner City Boxing Club of Prince George. It is a four-day, high-performance training camp that runs from August 27 to August 30th. Coach Tom White will be travelling with a select few and he looks forward to kicking off the 2026/2027 season with this incredible learning opportunity, “there is so much more to be gained by attending a camp than just the training, there is the invaluable knowledge gained by interacting with other boxers and past/future opponents, the comradery building of teammates, and having exposure to various coaching styles.”

A huge thank you going out to Inner City Boxing PG and their stellar coaches for making this camp possible. The considerable amount of time, effort, preparation, and organization to host such an event is immense and it does not go unappreciated.
