One day, mid-November of last year, this young woman, Elisabeth, came in to my studio from the rain (I seem to recall it was raining). She said she was looking for a place that could help her fight off seasonal depression she was certain affects her. SAD (seasonal affective disorder) is a type of depression related to changes in season. Lack of energy and motivation and feeling moody are often the symptoms one would experience.

I didn't have a chance to ask questions I normally would have asked her to get clearer understanding of her goals... she, herself, was clearer than crystal!
* avoid tendencies of SAD
* remain active
* strengthen upper body
* implement better eating habits
* stronger core
* loose 10 pounds
* improve endurance
* and maybe think of taking up running again.

Elisabeth is a wonderful addition to our Paravie family... healthier, happier and stronger, for herself and her family.

Les glucides

You want to decide which gym to join.
You are thinking of doing a keto diet.
Maybe you'd like to go vegetarian.
You are looking for a partner to workout with.
... as for me, I've had my ups and downs this past 2019.
I've been lighter, and I've been heavier.
I've felt great and I've felt awful.
I've been feeling very HEAVY lately, from stress, emotional, burden, and mental weariness. It's hard to shake these off at times.

All that I need is all around me. I have to quiet my mind and focus on my health and fitness first. Everything else is second.

Je sais, ce sont les vacances et les enfants sont à la maison. Les priorités viennent en premier. Faites votre entraînement, même si cela signifie que vous devez amener l'enfant!

Nous donnons souvent des minimums dans l'effort de faire des choses, et nous nous demandons pourquoi nous n'obtenons pas de résultats.
Ou pourquoi vous échouez !!!
Vous devez être obsédé par l'effort maximum pour réussir!

Weight lifting, why not for you?

I've heard many concerns about lifting weights:
I don't want to get hurt.
I'm not interested in bulking up.
It's not for me. It doesn't do anything for me.
I don't want to look manly.

Let's look at the benefits of weight lifting then.
Weight lifting, or strength training or resistance training, builds even a small amount of muscle mass. What this does, is increase your metabolism and allows more calorie burning particularly even during your resting period.

When you workout at a high intensity strength training, getting to that anaerobic level triggers more fat burning for hours long after you finish your exercises. Weight loss will be evident. So, for a woman, you can actually achieve a more beautiful, leaner body with more definition.

A stronger you, means you will have a better posture and you'll be better equipped in avoiding injuries.

Don't avoid lifting weights. The weight loss and trimming down may take some time to develop. It takes hard work to transform our shape. However, the most immediate and positive effects of weight training are, an increase in energy level, a better appetite and getting better sleep.

So, with those concerns for weight lifting, focus on the benefits instead, because the results are real.

Being healthy and fit means to build strength and endurance. It's not the fancy workouts or equipment that will get you the results you want... it's being consistent with the basics. Master them, do them consistently, and commit fully to your journey.

How to battle high sugars during this Halloween:

Many of our kids this evening will come home with a buckets of treats. The next couple of days everyone at home will be consuming maybe over 2 cups of sugar just from these treats alone. Here's somethings you can do to help you through this sugar-load:

Drink lots of water, today, tomorrow and thereafter. Make sure you get a least 8 glasses each day. Cut down on alcohol consumption. Water will be a better choice, particularly with these sugars around.

Move, move, move... it's a good thing that you'll be doing a bit of walking with the kids this evening, you're ahead already. But id you got the "door-duty", make time to get your heart pumping, raising your pulse for a few minutes each day to burn off some of those calories from these added sugars.

Eat foods with great source of protein. This will help you feel fuller, and help you consume less of those treats in one seating. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables so you don't crave as much from the bucket of candies.

Drink green tea, eat berries, consume foods that are high in antioxidants. Antioxidants lower blood sugar.

Stay safe this evening.

You are always feeling tired.
You don't sleep well.

Exercice pour combattre le stress

Comme beaucoup d'entre nous, le stress semble faire partie de notre mode de vie ces jours-ci. Nous continuons à penser, 'un jour, ça va devenir plus facile'.

Un des premiers effets du stress, c'est que nous avons tendance à manger moins parce que nous devenons préoccupés, sans énergie pour le combattre. Comme cela continue et devient chronique, nous nous tournons vers la nourriture pour le confort. Donc, nous mangeons plus, souvent des aliments moins nutritifs pour se sentir bien.

La réponse naturelle de notre corps est de libérer des produits chimiques qui vous disent qu'il est heureux à cet état et augmente ainsi votre poids. Ces hormones de stress sont ce que nous appelons le cortisol.

La meilleure solution pour nous tous est de faire de l’exercice. L'exercice libère des produits chimiques qui vont combattre le cortisol. Ce sont les endorphines. Les endorphines sont parfois appelées "les hormones du bonheur". Trouvez un moyen de relaxer, de détourner votre attention du stress et de vous sentir calme. Certaines personnes peuvent faire de la méditation, ou une simple promenade fera aussi bien.
