Thank you. š
If we currently train together or have trained with me in the past, if you shared any of my posts, or talked about me to your friends, I just want to say thank you.
This year alone I had to shut down 4 times which equated up to 9 weeks no work. When the government shutdown indoor fitness, I woke up earlier and moved all the gym equipment to the parking lot and trained everyone outdoors. This year was frustrating, scary, and unpredictable.
But it was all worth it.
Because it was your continued trust in me that allowed me to keep going. It was your excitement to train that fired me up. It was the unexpected text messages youād send telling me you achieved something that you couldnāt do prior to training with me.
I just want you to know, all those little things mean the world to me.
So for that, thank you. Letās continue to get strong for 2022 šŖš„

Ever heard that cheesy phrase, ādo something future you will thank you forā?
hereās a story.
The first time I stepped into a weight room, I was 13 years old. The gym was a small community center 15-20min away from my house.
It was me and 2 of my best friends growing up. We picked up every weight, tried every machine and slammed every ball (we never did squats because we thought thatād stunt our growth š)
We had no structure, no program, no idea what sets and reps were, and almost every workout had to have bicep curls.
I enjoyed it.
one day I decided to go to the gym on my own because my two friends were out on vacation with their families. It was the first time going to the gym by myself. I was extremely nervous and Iāll never forget it. Hereās why
That day some meathead approached me.
He wore black adidas sweatpants and a tight white sleeveless undershirt. Iād wear an undershirt too but my XS sized shirt was baggy on me š
He tapped me on the shoulder while I sat on the lat pull down machine and angrily said, āyou and your friends need to stop coming here. This place is only for adults. You kids donāt know what youāre doing.ā š”
Little 13 year old me was never one to stand up for myself or talk back to anyone.
But that day I said, āwell I canāt skip chest day tomorrow. So Iāll be here same place, same time.
He shook his head and left. Never saw him since.
I think about that and If I actually listened to that man, Iād never be where I am now. My āfitness journeyā wouldāve ended there.
But I didnāt. And now:
ā
Iām helping people take that first step into the gym space like nervous me once did alone
ā
I help people understand how to train with the best quality information backed up through anecdotes and science when I had no clue how to train.
ā
I provide an environment where training is fun, engaging, and you belong in that space when I had a bully try to boot me out of the gym.
So whenever I see someone who is clearly a beginner in the weight room, I smile a bit. because I was once in their shoes. I know theyāve got a long journey ahead of them
So thank you 13 year old Melvin. Youāve done well ššŖ
If thereās anything that fitness on Instagram has taught me, itās how to target/activate my glutes. But letās not forget the benefits of strong glutes (aside from just looking good) š
1ļøā£ Strong glutes are important for proper pelvic alignment. If you sit on your ass all day, then your pelvis is tilted forward which can lead to tight hip flexors and lower back pain. Keep those glutes strong!
2ļøā£ Strong glutes can provide more stability for your knees. Your glutes are attached to your IT band which attaches to the outer edge of your knees. Your IT band is a thick connective tissue and it needs to be tight from the contraction of your glutes. There are some cases where the IT band is too tight causing pain but thatās a discussion for another day.
3ļøā£ Glutes increase power and performance. Glutes are in charge of producing a lot of force through hip extension. Whether if your a runner, lifter, or an athlete that needs to jump, glutes are the star players for performance goals!
I love squats and I love bicep curls. I saw this exercise from .3dfit a while ago i had to give it a try on the exxcentric flywheel!
I think I have a new favourite exercise š

^How I feel after helping someone.
Give it a try š
Want to live pain free? Train what you own
The conventional barbell deadlift is not a one sized fits all. Yup I said it.
Hereās the thing, I know Iām strong, I know Iām mobile, and I have a pretty strong core, but my anthropometric will not allow me to conventionally deadlift of the floor with a neutral spine. So instead, I raise the bar to a height that is appropriate for my body. Iām now stronger and healthier because of it. If youāre feeling your deadlifts in your low back, consider modifying by adjusting the height, stance, or a different variation. That way you can get the most out of deadlift. Because letās be honest⦠the deadlift is a pretty badass lift.
Train what you own and youāll be capable of more. Train outside your capabilities and youāll lose what you own.
