Michael Benjamin Lwoki was a basketball pioneer, national-team player and captain, coach, educator and sports administrator whose career connected Sudan, South Sudan, Africa and the Arab world.
His life was dedicated to basketball, education, coaching, leadership and sports development.

๐ถ EARLY LIFE
Michael Benjamin Lwoki was born in Mukono, Uganda, in 1946, while his father, the late Benjamin Lwoki, was in Uganda after being sent by the British to undertake an Education Diploma course from 1944โ1948.
Michael began his education at St. Francis School in Khartoum in 1952 and continued at Comboni College, Khartoum, until his father returned to Southern Sudan following the military takeover of General Ibrahim Abboud in 1958.
As his father returned to teaching, Michael joined Gulumbi Elementary School. He later briefly returned to Comboni in Khartoum before being sent to Juba Commercial Secondary School in Khartoum in the early 1960s.

๐ DISCOVERING BASKETBALL
While a student at Comboni College, Khartoum, Michael developed a strong interest in basketball, one of the schoolโs famous sports.
His talent quickly became evident, and basketball became the sport through which he would build an extraordinary career.
He first played for Al-Merrikh and later joined Al-Hilal.
At Al-Hilal, he helped the club move from the second league to the first league and later became its captain.

Michael represented the Sudan National Team until 1980.
He served as national-team captain for many years, including the period 1968โ1978.
๐ 1975 โ ARAB CHAMPIONSHIP
One of the greatest achievements of his playing career came in 1975, when he led Sudan to the Arab Basketball Championship in Kuwait City.
Sudan defeated Iraq in the final to win the championship trophy.
๐ 1976 โ AFRICAN CONTINENTAL TEAM
Following the African Basketball championship in Dakar, Senegal, in 1976, Michael was selected for the African Continental Team.

Michael went on to become an accomplished coach.

* ๐ Served as head coach of Al-Hilal at the African Teams Championship in 1994.
* ๐ฆ๐ช Spent many years coaching basketball teams in the UAE.
* ๐ Served as Chairperson of the Coaches Committee of the Sudan Basketball Association (SBA) for 10 years.

๐ EDUCATION & GERMANY
Michael earned his Physical Education Diploma from Bayreuth University in Southern Germany.
Because of his excellent performance in sports, he received a scholarship to Germany in 1978 for postgraduate studies in Physical Education.
He later received another scholarship to pursue a masterโs degree and successfully completed it in Leipzig, Germany, in 1987.

After graduating in 1974, Michael worked with the National Ministry of Youth and Sports in Khartoum.
He remained involved in sports administration until the CPA period in 2005.
His professional career combined sports administration, coaching, education and basketball development.

Michael worked in the United Arab Emirates from 1980โ1987 and again from 1990โ2000.
While in the UAE, he coached Al-Nisr Al-Riyadhi in Ras Al Khaimah.
According to the family biography, he helped develop the team from its early stages until it became a champion among clubs in the Emirates.

๐ธ๐ธ SERVICE TO SOUTH SUDAN
Following the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005, Michael returned to serve his people through sports.
From 2005โ2011, he served as a coordinator in Khartoum for the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
After South Sudanโs independence in 2011, he was appointed Advisor to the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Juba, a position he held until his death.

Michael Benjamin Lwoki passed away on October 8, 2012.
He was laid to rest in Loka Round, Lainya County, South Sudan.
His funeral was held at the home of his younger brother, Hon. Robert Ladu Lwoki, who was identified in the biography as Chairperson of the South Sudan Land Commission and Chairperson of the National Basketball Federation.
