Seibukan Karate Dojo Edmonton Traditional Okinawan karate fighting for a better world. Our dojo is in Strathcona High School, in south-central Edmonton.

We are a provincially-registered non-profit, and chartered by the International Okinawan Shorin-ryu Seibukan Karate Association.

So when I found out A was being cyberbullied, I sent her this from Murphy and we got back hand-drawn thanks.

Today is Canadian Thanksgiving.

I understand why some thoughtful people are critical of Thanksgiving because of its historical origin. Despite that, though, the recognition of what and who is good in your life and making sure you express gratitude for those remains one of the best intersections of Western and Japanese culture.

In that sense, I give sincere thanks for the members of my little dojo, shown at my 70th birthday a year ago. Visitors and newcomers to the dojo have repeatedly told me what good and welcoming people I have, and they're right. We have a rare community of very good, humble, dedicated, and caring people, and I will always be deeply grateful to them.

Nine members of our little dojo have travelled to Okinawa over the past year on several different trips and trained with the best Seibukan sensei in the world. Two more are headed there next week.

I am very proud that our people make this effort.

Lucy and I will be going for our tenth time since 2014 in a few months. That includes four years when we couldn't go because of COVID.

Some people have said I'm boasting when I mention this, but their opinions don't matter. We're simply following the advice of Zenpō Sensei, who urged all Seibukan karateka to go to Okinawa, eat the food, and breathe the air. On our last trip, he told us that Okinawa was our second home, and that made us very happy.

I'm an old man, and there are many karateka far more skilled than I am. Nonetheless, our frequent training in Okinawa distinguishes our dojo from most others in Edmonton. We continually bring back the lessons of our teachers to share with and educate our students.

Come to our dojo and learn traditional Okinawa karate and its "satanic" and "pagan" principles of humility, community, respect, commitment, openness, diversity, equity, inclusion, and care for others.

The algorithm fed me an ad today from an upscale hotel with the copy, "lounging by the pool."

And if that's your thing, hey, good on you. On your holiday, you should do what makes you feel good, you should do what you truly love and what restores your soul.

That's exactly what Lucy and I do when we flee the Alberta winter every year and fly to a subtropical island. Not exactly to lounge, though, and in a dojo, not a pool.
