Here are what I believe to be some of the most effective supplements for building muscle mass and losing body fat.

1.Whey or Beef protein: Whey and or Beef protein is a high-quality protein source that contains all essential amino acids necessary for muscle repair and growth. Consuming whey protein post-workout can support muscle recovery and help meet daily protein needs. I put protein as number one because I believe it's the single most important part of nutrition when trying to build muscle and lose body fat. I also believe that taking in protein from real food is superior if possible.

2. Creatine: Creatine is a naturally occurring compound that helps increase muscle energy production, allowing for greater strength and muscle gains during resistance training. It may also aid in muscle recovery and improve exercise performance. The fact that creatine monohydrate is the most researched and proven effective natural supplement in the world, makes it number 2 on my list.

3.Beta-alanine: Beta-alanine is an amino acid that can increase muscle carnosine levels, which helps buffer lactic acid buildup during high-intensity exercise. This may delay muscle fatigue and improve exercise performance, especially during intense training sessions. Because high intensity exercise is something I do on the regular, Beta-alanine falls just inside my top 3.

4.Vitamin D: Vitamin D plays a role in muscle function, immune health, and hormone regulation. Supplementing with vitamin D may help optimize muscle strength and performance, especially in individuals with low blood levels of vitamin D. I have it at number four because we just don't get enough from the sun with our Canadian winters.

5. Caffeine: Caffeine is a stimulant that can increase energy levels, enhance focus, and improve exercise performance. It may also boost metabolism and increase fat oxidation. Caffeine for me equals a better effort in each individual workout. When you add that up over many workouts it can definitely go a long way.

January Transformation Challenge Category #5 Alcohol

This is the final category of the challenge. Alcohol is one of the most harmful substances we can put in our bodies. Alcohol will most certainly crush our chances of success when trying to improve health and fitness. I made alcohol its own category for this reason. The rules again are simple. According to anything over and above 2 drinks per week starts to negatively effect your health. Rules for this category are as follows...

-6 points will be awarded at the end of each week if the contestant has had a maximum of only 2 drinks or less in total within the week.

-1 drink per day will be allowed without contestants losing any additional points but will also not award them any positive points.

-Minus point will be awarded for multiple drinks in a 24 hour period (per day). Negative -1 for each drink over and above 1 per day. Example (if you have 3 drinks in one day you will receive a negative -2 score for that individual day).

*1 drink is equal to 1 once of alcohol.

This one is really simple. Sleep is one of the most important things we can do for our overall well-being.
-1 Point will be awarded daily for getting 8+ hours of sleep.
-6 to 7 hours of sleep will count as zero points.
-Less than 6 hours of sleep is minus 1 point.

When following an exercise program, one of the most overlooked aspects is often recovery. As much as we'd like to constantly improve by simply increasing volume or intensity, most of us run into plateaus and even set backs in both physique and performance due to poor ex*****on of proper recover.

Achieving optimal recovery can be tricky with all that life throws at you; poor sleep and high stress levels are two of the worst and can be difficult to control. The best strategy is to focus on what you can control like how you fuel your body and following a periodized fitness program with specific dosing of volume and varied exercise intensity. If you manage to do these things properly, the other not so controllable stuff seems to improve by default.

When you've got a clear road map to success, the journey is much more enjoyable and achievable.

Missing OCR races this year? Well now you can still do them right from your own back yard. I am putting together an outdoor OCR League. A fitness League where you use the equipment I provide (OCR League Kit $120) to compete in a weekly OCR style Race/Workout. Today I did a test run with one of the kits I built. PM me if interested.
