During World War II, German engineers developed a unique attachment called the Krummlauf. The name means curved barrel in German.

It was designed to allow soldiers to fire around/over cover without exposing themselves to enemy fire. The attachment mounted to a Sturmgewehr 44 (StG-44) and redirected the bullet as it exited the barrel.

While the concept was innovative, the extreme stress on the barrel caused the attachments to wear out quickly and they had a limited lifespan - typically 160-300 rounds for the 30-45 degree variants.

The Girardoni air rifle, developed in the late 1700s, used compressed air instead of gunpowder and could fire up to 20 shots before reloading.

Lewis and Clark carried one during their expedition in 1804 and often demonstrated it because it could fire repeatedly without smoke.
