What It Really Takes

Everyone says they want to be in the top 1%. The reality is very few are willing to live like it.

Being elite isn’t about working hard once in a while—it’s about making the right choices every single day. It’s surrounding yourself with teammates, coaches, trainers, and friends who push you to be better instead of accepting average.

It means training with purpose. Hockey-specific development beats random workouts. Every rep, every sprint, every drill should make you a better hockey player—not just someone who can lift more weight.

It means putting your phone away in the gym. Less scrolling. More focus. More intent.

It means fueling your body properly. Nutrition isn’t optional if you want elite results. Recovery, sleep, and healthy habits matter just as much as what you do on the ice.

Most importantly, it means doing the work when nobody is watching. The extra skating. The mobility. The conditioning. The shooting. The details that aren’t glamorous but separate good players from great ones.

The biggest difference? Most players only work hard to their comfort level. Elite players push beyond it. They embrace discomfort because they know that’s where growth happens.

If you want to be the top 1%, stop doing what everyone else is doing.

Start doing what 99% aren’t willing to do. 🟢⚫️

After spending time at the Brick Tournament this week, I left with mixed emotions.

First, credit where it’s due. It’s an unbelievable tournament, and the organizers, volunteers, and staff did an outstanding job putting together a first-class event for the kids.

What stuck with me, though, was the amount of pressure being placed on young players. Watching the behaviour of some parents in the stands, and seeing the way a few former pro players that were coaching treated organizers, officials, and even kids, was disappointing.

In my opinion, that’s part of what’s wrong with youth hockey today.

We’ve become so focused on getting to the next level that we’ve forgotten why most kids started playing in the first place: because they love the game.

Not every player develops at the same pace, and that’s okay. Our responsibility as adults is to create an environment where kids can compete, learn, fail, grow, and enjoy the journey—not one driven by fear, pressure, or early labels.

The game needs more kids playing, not fewer. It needs more coaches, parents, and mentors who value character, teamwork, and development over individual recognition.

If we truly want to grow hockey in North America, we need to stop asking, “How do we create the best 10-year-old?” and start asking, “How do we help develop the best 20-year-old—and an even better person?”

Let’s get back to putting the kids first. The game will be better because of it.

I’m incredibly excited and honored to be coming home to Maple Leaf Athletic Club as the Head Coach of the U17AAA program and Coaching Development Coordinator.

MLAC has a rich history and tradition in our community, and I’m looking forward to helping build an environment that reflects the standards, expectations, and excellence this club deserves.

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter. A chapter built on accountability, development, commitment, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Our goal is to create a culture where players, coaches, and families understand that growth, character, and performance go hand in hand.

Development will not be an option—it will be an expectation. Commitment will not be occasional—it will be required. Excellence will not be something we talk about—it will be the standard from Day 1.

I believe in creating opportunities for young athletes by challenging them, supporting them, and helping them understand what it truly takes to succeed at the next level both on and off the ice.

I want to thank MLAC for the opportunity and trust they have placed in me. I’m excited to work alongside our coaches, players, families, and leadership group as we raise the standard and build something our entire community can be proud of.

The future is bright. The work starts now.

We like to label coaches as either “old school” or “new school.” The old school coach is an authoritarian and the new school coach is a players coach.

The truth is - the best coaches are both.

They hold high standards and hold you accountable to meet those standards every day. They’re at times hard to play for because they’re consistently pushing to make you and the team better.

They also invest in the relationship. The more you show the player you care, the more the player buys in and the harder you can push them.

Let’s stop using these terms. They’re outdated. The best coaches bring the best of both.

Big addition to our staff this season 👊

We’re excited to welcome Ryan to both Prodigy Hockey and behind the bench with our MLAC U17AAA group.

Ryan brings an elite background to our program — playing Division 1 NCAA hockey at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he excelled as a student-athlete while earning his Bachelor of Arts and Science in Elementary Education. He went on to play 9 seasons of pro hockey across the ECHL, CHL, and Europe.

Since transitioning to coaching in 2013, Ryan has built an impressive resume. He spent 6 seasons with Southside Athletic Club, including 3 years as a U15 AAA Head Coach. Most recently, he led the U17 AAA Flyers for 4 seasons — making two provincial appearances and capturing a provincial championship in 2024.

Ryan brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and a true understanding of what it takes to develop athletes not just for the next level in hockey, but in life. His ability to connect, teach, and prepare players for junior opportunities makes him a huge addition to our group.

Excited to get to work 🤝

Everyone says I’m crazy to coach in this day in age but they have no idea why they are missing.

People say hockey is just a game. But if you truly understand it, you know it’s so much more.

Hockey is where character is built, adversity shapes you, and accountability is learned. It carried me through my youth, kept me grounded when I could have lost my way, and taught me the power of great mentorship while showing me who I never wanted to be. No matter how many times I tried to step away, the game always pulled me back when I needed it most.

Watching my son go through minor hockey reinforced why this matters. I saw coaches who inspired and others who discouraged, and I promised myself I would always serve the game the right way. Giving back has given me more than I could ever give it.

Seeing players come together, put the team first, and watching them grow on and off the ice is something I’ll never take for granted. Coaching demands sacrifice, but when you see who your players become, it’s always worth it.

Grateful for this game, my players, my family, the coaches I work with, and the organizations that trust me to do what I love. The team will always be bigger than the individual.
