Day 3 of A Week Without Bike Lanes

Anyone driving in the core of the city with a modicum of self awareness can't escape the geometric reality, that there will never be enough lanes if everyone is forced to get around by car. Many folks riding in rush hour traffic this week are finding that they aren't slowing the cars down, the mass of cars is slowing down the people on bikes. Stuck in traffic together, the driver and cyclist aren't antagonizing each other, they are growing empathy, chipping away at the armour of isolation created by car dependence.

The only solution to the gridlock is to get people using more efficient modes of transportation than the personal automobile, like bikes. And the most effective way to encourage more people to ride is by providing safe, connected bike infrastructure that is separated from car traffic. The UCP know that meddling in municipal bike lane implementation won't save people in the city from gridlock. They're just using bike lanes to get their base riled up and distracted from the abysmal job they are doing with things in their purview.

This week you'll likely see more people riding bikes in traffic than usual as the Edmonton cycling community marks a Week Without Bike Lanes.

The UCP is threatening to remove bike lanes in Edmonton. But taking out bike lanes won't make cyclists disappear. It will just force them to ride on the road and take the lane, as they are legally entitled to. So if you see someone riding on the road this week and would prefer they weren't there, remember that they don't want to be there either, but this is a glimpse into the future that the UCP wants.

Huge thanks to everyone who spoke up at council yesterday in favour of safer streets, and prioritizing people's ability to choose how they get around over storage of private property on public roadways.

Bike Edmonton will be onsite to do safety checks, tune ups, and repairs on Thursday, August 20. First come, first served!

We also now have volunteers that can do some basic service for walkers, rollators, and wheelchairs!

Congratulations to Joanne and Nils, who were the 1999th and 2000th patrons of the Old Strathcona Farmers Market Bike Valet this year! They received $100 in Market bucks as well as a set of lights and Bike Edmonton membership. We are on track to park more than double the number of bikes than we did last year.

We'd like to thank our volunteer team, who staff the bike valet every weekend, as well as Pedego Edmonton and for sponsorship that helped upgrade the fencing.

If you're using the bike valet, please remember that you need to pick up your bike by 3pm.

Via special hamster cargo bike delivery, hamster bells have been restocked! They are hamster approved, even though they are much louder than any hamster you've ever heard.
