Footwork might look simple, but it’s one of the most important parts of Reformer Pilates. Small changes in position can create a completely different experience on the reformer 👣 So, why footwork first?
1. Warms up the whole body – Footwork looks like it’s just for your legs, but it actually wakes up your calves, hamstrings, quads, glutes, and core while gently mobilizing your hips, knees, and ankles.
2. Activates the ‘powerhouse’ (your core) – It teaches you to initiate movement from your core, pressing from the center out, not just pushing with your feet.
3. Connects you to the reformer – It’s a safe, grounded way to feel the springs, carriage, and alignment before moving into more complex exercises.
4. Establishes breath and mind-body connection – This is where you set your rhythm, focus on controlled breathing, and start moving with intention.
5. Checks posture and alignment – Instructors can see how your pelvis, spine, and shoulders are positioned and cue adjustments right away.
6. Helps instructors assess the class – It gives instructors an opportunity to observe the class’s strength, coordination, control, and understanding of movement so they can adapt their instruction to best support everyone throughout the rest of class.
Footwork is where you align, connect, and prepare your body for the rest of your practice. By starting with strong foundations, everything else you do in class becomes more effective.
