Borderland Mustang Wrestling

Hey everyone. With wrestling season upon us, we thought a post about the Mustang program was in order. 20 years ago, Mustangs began with Cole Mann, his mom and his uncle and coach Pete Benedix. With no team at all, but hope for bringing wrestling back was in our sights. We worked hard, fundraised like crazy and a program developed. At one time, we had over 100 kids between the Falls and Fort Frances. We were a family and there was much success. Eyes were set upon getting it back into the high school. Pete fought hard and with several attempts, the school board passed it and we were allowed to try and get a Bronco wrestling program going.

Unfortunately, and even though we had an excellent feeder program, we didn't have the numbers. We tried to co-op with Northwoods, but it was unsuccessful. The interest and the funding was not there at that level.

We pushed forward and continued on with the program and the numbers continued to decline.

It's with a heavy heart, we have decided to disband the Mustang program. It is now going into the school as a rec program.

Our lease is up in October at Backus. We've donated start up money to the new program and will be leaving the red mats at Backus for the upcoming season.

We wish the program a ton of success going forward. Thank you to Jeremy and Hudson for all the time and effort put in over the years. And to all the previous coaches. Also to Kari Gansch who has been there since day 1. Everyone played a part, and most importantly, the parents!

Exciting event coming up!

Malaika Batdorf from California, with a local alumni dad and coach, Joe Batdorf, who wrestled for the Broncos...will be running a takedown clinic at The workshop!

Event will take place on Tuesday, July 29th from 5:30-7:30pm.

Cost will be $30/child. (Pre payment to hold your spot, will be required)
If we get enough kids signed up, we'll have 2 sessions. 1 @ 5:30-6:30 & 1 @ 6:30-7:30.

WRESTLERS AND JIU-JITSU KIDS ARE WELCOME! 5 yo + encouraged to participate!!!!

Update: due to school concerts on Tuesday (tomorrow), there will be no Greco Roman and Freestyle practice/demonstration that day. It may be held on this Thursday instead. Keep an eye on the page for updates.

Last chance: for those in either Group A or Group B who have not responded regarding the team dual this weekend, let me know ASAP if your wrestler(s) will be at Deer River, or are interested in being there. I am sending in the team roster and exhibition roster tomorrow after practice. If you're interested, but unsure, simply message the page or reach out to a coach. We are happy to discuss it with you. We just need the wrestlers name and weight. We have a weight scale at the wrestling room and can easily check your wrestlers' weights tomorrow at about 6PM. Group A is welcome to observe Group B practice if they show up to get weighed. The dual is to start at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Plan to be there by 9 a.m. Let's go, Mustangs! 💪

Attention Mustang Families: there is a team dual in Deer River on 4/5/25. This is a fun opportunity for our Mustang wrestlers, as they get to learn what team duals look like while getting some extra mat time. I am working on creating a wrestling roster so we can compete there. Please message the page if you intend to go so I can plan accordingly. The plan would be to arrive at 9 a.m. in Deer River for weigh ins, then wrestling at 10 a.m. We will register our wrestlers' weights ahead of time, with a 2 lb allowance. I would like to know who's all going by end of Practice on Tuesday (4/1/25). If you are unsure about your child wrestling there, then please discuss it with a coach ahead of time. Also, if you're not wrestling there, feel free to come watch and support your team! It's $5 per spectator for those planning to watch and support their wrestlers.

This is a GREAT source for camps as well as tournaments. You can still hit some tournaments with out a coach.

Group B: Reminder that practices will continue to run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:15-8 p.m. for those qualified for state and those invited for practice partners for those qualified for state. Let's finish this season strong! 💪
