Instead of asking why people stay in relationships that are unhealthy or abusive, we should focus on what we can do to support them and why their partner chooses to abuse them.

The stigma surrounding being subjected to abuse often makes people feel as though it is their fault for staying in the relationship. This ignores the barriers to leaving abusive relationships. Some of those barriers include being isolated by the abusive partner, fear of losing their children or pets, financial challenges, and more.

It is never the fault of the person being subjected to abuse, and we should never make them feel like it is.
