Happy New Year to all my friends and students, near and far.
There is no better time than now to clear the slate and begin anew. Learn from the past, keep what was useful, and let those lessons guide you forward with purpose and humility. May this coming year bring growth in skill, strength in character, and balance in all areas of your life. Wishing you happiness, success, hope, and peace of mind in the year ahead.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
To all my family, friends, and students, I wish you a joyful, peaceful, and safe holiday season. Please remember to be kind to one another—you’ve only ever walked in your own shoes, not anyone else’s. A little patience and understanding can go a very long way.
Take care, my friends.

Unfinished Business — 50 Years in the Making 🥋
In May 2025, I stepped onto the floor at the PEI Shotokan Karate Daigaku – Charlottetown Dojo and trained through to mid-October. Or maybe more accurately… I returned.
Fifty years ago in New Brunswick, I was a Shotokan student who worked up to 4th kyu (purple belt). Life took its turns, as it does — and that chapter was left unfinished. I’ve come to call this journey exactly what it is: unfinished business.
This year, I had the privilege of training under Sensei Roy Stuart, who welcomed me as a student and provided the guidance, leadership, and technical clarity I needed to earn 3rd kyu and then 2nd kyu. That kind of support matters — especially when you’re picking up a dream that’s been waiting half a century.
A sincere, heart-felt thank you, Shihan. Your understanding, kindness, and leadership made it possible for me to reconnect with a long-held goal: earning my 1st Dan Black Belt (still in the making). I’m deeply grateful.
I’m already looking ahead to next spring, when I plan to return and continue the journey. And while it may sound cliché, those who walk this path know the truth:
The real journey begins at 1st Dan.
Osu. 👊

Classes at the Doley Academy of Martial Arts will be starting back up in the very near future. Stay tuned as I make the final arrangements to get things “kicked” off. One class a week comprised of one hour of Filipino Martial Arts (Kali, Eskrima, Silat) and one hour of Jeet Kune Do (including Jun Fan kickboxing). I really enjoyed being a student at the PEI Shotokan Karate Daigaku in Charlottetown this summer. I’ll still practice Shotokan Karate but will mostly be on my own over the winter. Time to get back teaching FMA and JKD.
