That concludes a great week of training in Montreal! Five days, 16 training sessions, and over 90 rounds of randori between the NextGen and Senior camps. And most importantly, countless new memories made with friends!

Tonight's open mat (Thursday August 20) and tomorrow's competitive class (Friday August 21) are unfortunately canceled as all of our instructors are unavailable. Our summer program will resume with our regular schedule on Monday August 24.

First day of the NextGen and National Training Camp is in the books for members of the club. This year, five athletes made the trip to Montreal to train with over 250 athletes from all across Canada. Day one was a great experience, and we still have four more days to come. And of course, as is becoming tradition, we had to make sure we stopped and got pictures at the dinosaurs with our friends from Otoshi and Kimo.

There will be no Judo practice Monday, August 3, due to the LB gym closing early for New Brunswick Day. Our regular summer schedule resumes on Wednesday.

This was a great weekend for the Club at the final tournament of the Judo season, The NUMA Cup! Over two days, we had 6 fighters competing in 8 categories.

On Day 1, the club was represented by Benjamin, Daniel, and Adam.

Benjamin fought in the stacked U14 -55kg division. While he didn't manage to make the podium, he fought extremely well, going 2-2 in his pool, winning both his fights by Ippon (including a beautiful ippon against a blue belt). His two losses were very hard fought matches against green belts, one by a late ippon and the other by decision. As this tournament officially marked one year since Benjamin started competing, this was a great performance!

Next up we had Daniel fighting in the u14 -46kg division. Daniel was a man on a mission, and won all three of his fights, including a hard fought final match against a blue/green belt, claiming the Gold!

Finishing Day 1 we had Adam fighting in the U18 -55kg division. Adam came out the gates very strong, winning his first three fights all by Ippon, making the finals. Unfortunately, after a dominate start to the match he zigged when he should have zagged against a very skilled opponent, finishing his day with a well earned Silver Medal.

On Day 2, we had and even bigger group competing, including Élise, Remi, Daniel, Ellie, and Adam.

The day started off strong with Élise fighting in the U10 -32kg division, in her first tournament ever. Élise showed a great combination of technique and aggression, winning both of her matches and earing herself the Gold!

Next up we had Remi fighting in the U12 -55kg division. Remi came out strong, winning his first match with a quick Ippon. His opponent then regathered themselves and came back to beat Remi in a closely contested second match, forcing the third and final match. Remi returned to form in the tiebreaker, winning with another quick Ippon, claiming the Gold.

Ellie fought in the U16 -63kg division in her second ever tournament, competing against two green belts and a blue belt (and national bronze medalist). Ellie fought amazingly well, winning her first match by ippon, and coming very close in her second match (threw for a waza-ari that could have been Ippon) before getting caught in the final 9 seconds. She then lasted almost two and a half minutes against the National bronze medalist, finishing her day with a hard fought 1-2 record and the Bronze medal! This was a great performance in itself, but truly exceptional when considering the level of her competition and that it was only her second tournament ever.

Daniel continued the mission he started on Day 1, fighting in the U16 -50kg yellow and orange belt division. Daniel again won all three of his matches, earning his second Gold of the tournament.

Finishing up the second day of competition we again had Adam, fighting in the U16 -55kg category. His day started off with some adversity, with a very hard fought, closely contested match against a tough competitor, where he unfortunately couldn't quite prevail. Adam bounced back with two strong showings, winning both matches by Ippon with slick tachiwaza and newaza technique, making the finals. In the finals, he met the same opponent he fought in his first match. It was another very closely contested match, but unfortunately Adam could not manage to get the win this time around, ending his day with his second hard fought Silver medal.

This concluded the weekend, with club fighters earing 4 Gold, 2 Silver, and 1 Bronze, with a combined record of 18 wins and 8 losses. Again, congratulations to all the athletes! You all make us very proud!

Due to athletes and coaches being away for the NUMA Cup this weekend, we are canceling classes for Friday, June 12. Regularly scheduled Thursday night open mat is still on tonight, from 7 to 9.

Day two of the National Championships was a hard day for the Club. Each of our three fighters had some ups and downs, with strong wins and hard fought/heartbreaking losses.

First up in the morning, we had Momo stepping up into a stacked U21 -57kg division. Her day started with a hard fought, closely contested match that she would eventually lose by yuko. She bounced back with a quick choke, but then lost her final fight of day by yuko in another closly contested match.

Hiro and Adam were up next in U16 -60kg and U16 -55kg. Hiro started off with a hard fought loss by yuko in golden score to the eventual Silver medalist. He then won his next two matches with some very quick, big throws for Ippon. His day would then end with another golden score yuko loss to the eventual Bronze medalist.

Adam had an almost identical day, losing his first match where he put in a scrappy performance before getting caught in a choke. He then also came back and won his next two matches with quick, big throws for Ippon. His day would end in his next match, when he zigged when he should have zagged, getting caught for Ippon.

Momo, U21 -57kg: 1-2
Hiro, U18 -60kg: 2-2
Adam, U18 -55kg: 2-2

This concluded the clubs day with 5 wins and 6 losses. Tomorrow we have Andrew fighting in Senior +100kg.

What a first day for the Club at the National Championships! Today we had two athletes competing in the U18 age category. Momo was fighting in the women's -57kg division, while Hiro fought in the men's -60kg division.

Hiro, a first year U16 athlete, stepped up to test himself in U18. By luck of the draw, he started his day against the current U18 -60kg Pan-American champion, and eventual gold medalistof the category. Hiro put fourth an excellent performance, staying competitive in the match and lasting until the final 18 seconds. He then fought another second year U18 athlete where he again put on an impressive performance, going the distance and coming very close to tying the score in the last few exchanges. For Hiro, the goal in this category was to gain experience with the main focus coming tomorrow in U16. And he not only gained the experience we wanted, but did so with an impressive performance.

Momo started her day off with a bang, earning a very quick armbar victory in her first match. She then ran into some adversity in her second match, where though she was competitive, she was eventually overcome by the athlete who would claim the Gold later in the day. Once in the repecharge, Momo bounced back with three more quick armbar victories earning a shot at the Bronze medal. In the fight for Bronze, Momo's newaza was again on full display as she earned her 5th armbar win of the day and the Bronze medal!!! Congratulations Momo!!!

We also want to give a shout out to Zoe and our friends at the Otoshi Judo Club, as she claimed the title of National Champion in -48kg!!!

Tomorrow we have three fighters competing, as Momo steps up an age category to U21, while Hiro and Adam compete in U16 -60kg and -55kg respectively. Let's go team!!!
